andsome Posted September 14, 2007 Report Share Posted September 14, 2007 After seeing this program discussed on here I downloaded it a couple of days ago. So far it does not seem to be doing much, at least that is as far as I can tell. It does not apear to have a facility to run a scan, but just sits there. Also it does not appear to have a facility for updates. Is there any point in leaving this on the computer, and if so WHY? Is there any point in upgrading to the paid for version, and if so WHY?I alreday have Nod 32 AV, Comodo pro firewall, Adaware 2007, SUPERAntiSpyware, Spyware Guard, A Squared, Startup Inspector and Panda's Anti rootkit program.One little thing that it does keep doing is to ask me if I want to allow C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe to run. I already have this disabled in Startup Inspector, but Win patrol asks every two minutes or so, and is annying to say the least. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Mike567 Posted September 14, 2007 Report Share Posted September 14, 2007 sounds like a conflict something keeps adding it to your startup folder.Winpatrol logs things like your startup's and host files etc, if anything changes them it will warn you.for example say someone redirects yourbank.com to their server using the host file, scotty will warn you that their has been a change to the host file, I dont know of any other program that will watch your host file so personally i find it brilliant and run it all the time. That will tell you just what WinPatrol does, andsome.The big difference between Scottie and Startup Inspector is that with the latter it just controls what starts up, Scottie is "on patrol" all the time. nellie2 Posted September 14, 2007 Report Share Posted September 14, 2007 They are both good programs for different reasons.As Boris pointed out in the other thread, Startup Inspector will tell you what your startup processes are.Winpatrol will give you a lot of information about your startups too (It's just one of the fantastic things that it does) But you do need to upgrade to the plus version to get the detailed information.The free version of Winpatrol is fully functional and I wouldn't go anywhere without Scotty sitting in my taskbar.Is it worth upgrading.. only you can answer that one. This link shows the difference between Winpatrol and Winpatrol Plus. There seems to be no facility to do this manually.If you click on the Plus tab there is a button there that will check for updates for you.But you can always keep an eye on Bills Blog (or mine) he will blog about any updates to Winpatrol.Deuces.. I can't really answer your question. I like the Plus version, but I think the best thing for you to do is to check out the link I posted a few posts back and see what the differences are and then make a decision as to whether you want or need those extra features.
