Not all Muslims are foreigners. A great many are UK born.

I am arguing that "If it is practically possible - and is not inappropriate or inconvenient to nurses or other patients" is reasonable. If staff are being coerced or bullied into carrying out such requests, then it is clearly wrong.

The 'protection of culture' idea is a little tricky when considering that British born Muslims could be making these requests. What faith/s are part of our culture? as I'm sure there are 3rd or 4th generation (probably longer) Brits practicing the Muslim faith. Do we stop interracial/faith marriages for fear of them watering down British culture? I would prefer that we didn't set our tolerance levels by matching them to those less tolerant, in some sort of tit-for-tat game. That is a road to potential disaster.

This has little to do with this topic, but I was assailed by this curious thought some time ago.

I offer this as nothing more than an interesting (to me at least) observation.

It looks as though Islam is in the period of its development that Christianity was in at the time if the Spanish Inquisition, the conquest of the Americas and the slaughter of non believers. It, Christianity, had two main factions who were "enemies", in addition to several spin off groups. The parallels are quite striking.

I believe the current Islamic year is approx 1428 and thus about 600 years behind our calendar - which almost exactly aligns with your hypothesis.

That's splitting hairs Sir. T. when I think you know exactly what I meant. If not, I meant we have not had this problem with any other religion, be they foreign or British, only from this particular denomination.

Despite all the atheists and agnostics I think you'll find that the UK is still largely Christian.

This is yet another case of religion causing more trouble than it's worth. Believe in your God if it makes you happy and causes NO PROBLEMS to your fellow men. (And women of course). :D

I'll second that Mr Andsome, but it would help if people stopped looking for trouble too.

I think it's the P.C. brigade that are looking for trouble. The seek to do as much as possible against the majority, in an attempt to appease the minorities, who in many instances are not looking for appeasement. There have been many instances of local councils outlawing references to Christmas celebrations and decorations, on the grounds that such celebrations would upset religious minorities. A prime example was Birmingham City Council. It was only intervention by moderate and sensible Muslims and Hindus etc, which got this stupid decision reversed, when they pointed out quite correctly that such actions alienated the majority. There was no need to even raise this business in the NHS in the first place.
