Panarchy Posted January 21, 2008 Report Share Posted January 21, 2008 Hello!This has been a problem for about a week now on my computer (my specs) and I can't find out the reason why. I have a few days ago bought two new USB sticks. A 1GB one and a 4GB one. Neither work on this computer. My DVD Drive doesn't work either (for burning or playing).I'm not sure why.It recognises the USB when I put it in, but it can't read or open it. AlanHo Posted January 21, 2008 Report Share Posted January 21, 2008 I have a few USB flash drives which are fine - Volkswagen sent me a car advert last month stored on a 512 MB stick. I decided to delete the advert but it refused - so I formatted the stick using Windows Explorer. It removed the files - but the stick no longer works - good job it was free.I also wrecked a stick a few months ago by not using the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the notification tray - this was before I appreciated the dangers.Have you been deleting stuff, formatting yours or unplugging them without following the correct procedure....? -pops- Posted January 21, 2008 Report Share Posted January 21, 2008 Memory sticks seem particularly prone to being destroyed by incorrect removal (as Alan points out). I have seen, and read about, so many that this has happened to.Be aware as well that you can also destroy the USB port itself by not using the correct disconnection procedure. -pops- Posted January 22, 2008 Report Share Posted January 22, 2008 Do the sticks work in another machine?If they do , it indicates that the USB ports are not working (as intimated in my reply above). You can get PCI cards with multiple USB ports on them quite cheaply if this is what has happened.Regarding your DVD drive, have you connected/disconnected that with the computer powered up?
