CurlyWhirly Posted January 24, 2008 Report Share Posted January 24, 2008 This has been happening for quite a while and I have ignored the problem but around half an hour ago it happened to me twice within a few minutes of each incident What happens is that the screen goes blank and I hear a click coming from the monitor like when my PC is first switched on when it's going through the POST (Power On Self Test)The monitor never comes back on * and I hear a single beep (I think)The other thing that happens is that the mouse pointer turns to a vertical line with an arrow at either end like when you try to expand the Windows taskbar to make it wider.Moving the mouse has no effect as the arrow 'thingy' is static.Also if I'm listening to music, the music continues to play as normal and is not distorted in anyway.Has anyone ever had this happen to them or knows what the problem is?I'm running XP Home SP2 and have no malware on my PC as I've checked by running NOD32, AVG anti-rootkit, a-squared and SpyBot.Cheers.p.s. the only way that I can get things back to normal is to press the soft reset button (I try to avoid turning my PC off when it's froze as it may cause damage) * until I press the soft reset button Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

rong Posted January 24, 2008 Report Share Posted January 24, 2008 Another thing to try would be to take the cable off the graphics card and put it back on, also to take the card out and put it back in to make sure it is in properly, I think it's better to take it out and put back in rather than just push it in. saying this though I can't think why the mouse should change. Could the monitor be kaput?I don't think so because when the reset button is pressed, a perfect display is seen.I know absolutely zilch about this type of problem, but could it possibly be the video card? Good answer, I never thought of that.I will investigate further and, if need be, take the graphics card right out and go back to onboard graphics to see if the problem reoccurs. I had to press it twice to get it back on.No problems with my monitor, as when the screen goes blank, I can still see the pointer 'thingy' which wouldn't happen if my monitor was kaput!I've taken the graphics card out and am running on onboard graphics to see if the fault lies with the graphics card.
