Lamb Chop
I have tried to get the latest updates. I had set my auto to let me know if ready etc as just complete auto seemed not to be working. So latest 2 - downloaded them - initialized but failed to install.Went to manual and did it again but they said already downloaded and then tried to install - failed. So what happens now? Seems I have these inside my computer somewhere but obviously corrupted. So forever without as sitting there and computer at far end saying there ready?I have tried FAQ and every other place I could find but there is no answer on the Microsoft sites I found anyway - not that I find their sites very user friendly.any suggestions? Like where I can find the uninstallable bits and get rid of them and try again??
Dencandy
Go back to the update site, note down the code numbers of the updates you downloaded. Then look for these in Add or Remove Programs (in Control Panel), making sure the Show Updates box is ticked. If they don't appear use Search for Files to find them. When found, delete them and download again.Or download them as exes from from the Windows Download Centre then run them. The corrupt files should be automatically overwritten. Also, do you know how to use Belarc? They provide a free security analyser which will list all Windows updates and hotfixes that you should have & will mark the missing or damaged files for you. A truly excellent little tool. You can find it here.I should also add that Updates can be downloaded, but will not install if you are using a non-genuine version of Windows. Lamb Chop
I have Belarc. Will run it again.I am a genuine owner and have had this computer for coming up to 5 years and have heaps of updates and genuine advantage tools etc etc and have had the verification done many times.I went to add/Remove but they are not there as failed.I will try to find them in files - how to I do that - run?Saying what? Dencandy
Belarc should mark them as "re-install" or something like that.Alternatively type the KB number into Windows Search - the Search on your computer, not the one on the Windows Update site - then delete them. You may have to enable Search Hidden Files. Then download them again.

Tried Run - no luck. Will now try windows search. If I can find it. :D Been there before just that I have to try to get back.
Lamb Chop
Ok found search in windows and ran it for the two updates - well actually ran first one only - all files including system and hidden - no luck so ran it again for name in file name only - no luck. Any more ideas where to find these pesky bits of corrupted downloaded updates?Maybe run CCleaner to get rid of temp files? Will that get rid of them?Have to be a better way as I am not the only one I bet who has had failed updates.
Dencandy
Have you tried Belarc yet? Make sure you update it first. The first time I ran it it told me I had 2 hotfixes that had been downloaded but weren't properly installed. I just went to the Windows download site & downloaded them again. Now 100% updated (except for some Office features that I don't use). Also it's probably worth searching the Microsoft Knowledge base using something like "failed updates".If none of this works I don't know what the answer is. andsome
Have you tried a system restore? Do you have a backup, i.e, in Acronis or something similar? :D
Dencandy
I've had a brief look at Windows Help & Support and it seems this is a not uncommon problem for these 2 updates. 2 points:1 they are both Vista only.2 seems something to do with .NET Framework also.Lamb Chop, do you have both these? The general view seems to be that if you've got both these then there must be a system corruption already there to prevent the installation.Does Vista have scannow? I don't know because I don't have Vista.I suggest you go to Windows Help & Support yourself (or Windows Knowledge Base) and wend your weary way through all the threads. Some people say the solved it, but YOU HAVE TO HAVE VISTA.
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
I am a bit confused at this stage. I have just looked up KB articles 110806 and 929300; the latter is an information article only (not a patch), and 110806 does not exist at all. Dencandy
I agree Pat, it's not very clear is it? Either way, neither seem to be required for XP & are only appropriate (but not necessary) for Vista.
Lamb Chop
Thanks guys - ansome will try system restore - haven't yet - will it get rid of the problem. Also I find that Microsoft is not that clear on its pages - as do you seemingly - mysterious thing this. Really one has to wonder why it is so popular because they seem to be a bit standoffish or too tech minded for people like me finding out as I go along. No I do not have Vista. 5 year old XP home edition SP 2.So if for vista why did they tell me to download these patches - I do have the two things on my add/remove that it wants to patch. On my add/remove I have following.Micro Net framework 1.1Hotfix KB8866903Micro Net framework 2.0Hotfix KB917283Hotfix KB922770Micro Net framework 3.0No hot fixes.Weird stuff going on then? If for Vista why on my XP surely its creator knows the difference - seems to me as we go along it is getting a bit murky on things. See why some say other OS are better or simpler but stuck with XP and reading some Tech Sites in Oz - they say Vista is a beta with bugs and should not have been released and they mainly are staying away from it etc for around 5 years in order to be fixed up.I thought wow - sad for anyone like me buying first time no knowledge and getting a computer with a system techs say has bugs I ran Belarc and also Seconia and I have up dated versions according to them on all fixes and versions except I have 3 flash players all same version - dont know if I need 3 as have Firefox, IE5, MSN and Secure IE browsers maybe one each - dont use MSN so maybe never got one? (need a who knows emoticon) :) I have had a good look around the sites and cant find anything to help me - but I also went back to Update and manually it said same two fixes were already there downloaded and tried once again to install and corrupted.I reckon I have something nasty lurking somewhere as I have silly things happening for yonks. Since back when I tried to download IE7 4/5 times and it bugged the whole system but maybe not who knows?I do have weird bit on Avast report that Super anti spyware has some corrupt files. Got rid of Spybot and Adaware both same on report. See other thread on this topic. I have asked Avast but got no answer on their forums. Still doesn't answer why auto wants to give me something I may not need and if you guys don't have these fixes on XP why did I get them ?Now stuck with them - will do a restore but bit dithery about it as last time took 4 hours to restore. Was panicked thinking computer completely gone and no disc to do anything with. Now know to fix this by booting with recovery etc - hopefully works if all is lost. andsome
System Restore should only take a matter of a few minutes, there must be something radically wrong. I am NOT an expert so DON'T do this until someone with more knowledge says to do so, but by now I would have got fed up with everything, and done a format and reinstall. :D
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
No hot fixes. You need to check 'Show Updates' on the Add/Remove panel to see the updates listed.Have you tried to update via http://www.update.microsoft.com/ ?
Boris
- they are both Vista only. These were released for XP as well :) - both to do with Net Framework.Non-installation may be to do with a video driver conflict ?You may like to have a look here :-http://www.tutorials-win.com/WindowsUpdate...Failure-244436/
Lamb Chop
ansome - didnt do the system restore as couldn't face it. So something is wrong then and when I had a look couldn't remember when the updates came down but last restore point was when it took 4 hours and that was just before a software distribution point close to second Tuesday so didnt - good job. Boris - thanks for that - looks like not the only one in bother but I found it to be a bit too complicated as dont have a clue what other programs use net framework and if I disable them - on boot up they will all try to load and become unstable too I thought from what was said. Big pickle. :D
andsome
If it cannot be sorted, there is an excellent guide on here to help you to reinstall the operating system. Print it out first. :D
Dencandy
Yes, Boris is right these updates are for XP as well as Vista, but seem to only be relevant if you use NET Framework. NET Framework is for using or designing applications used on Windows based Networks. For myself I don't have NET Framework installed as I'm not linked to a network (other than a simple one for a broadband connection). If you can't face a System Restore and don't want to reinstall your operating system, you could try uninstalling all the versions of NET Framework and see if that stabilises your computer. You've nothing to lose if you don't work with networks. If you decide you later need it you can always download the latest version again, then try the updates again. (But why bother if you're not linked to anything other than the simplest sort of network?)If none of this works, and you don't want to try System Restore again, then, as andsome says, it looks like re-installing XP may be the only alternative - unless you are prepared to live with the problems you've got. Unless others have better ideas. Anyway, before you go any further make back-ups of all your irreplaceable data files (if you haven't already done so), so that you have them for later use when you've got this problem sorted. andsome
Lamb Chop sent me a PM asking for a link to the installation guide that I had mentioned. I hope that everything has worked out for her. :D
Lamb Chop
andsome found the guide thank you. I noticed on my programs a shareware program I must have got some time and never looked at called Security Taskmaster. It lists all the programs on you computer and then rates them and tells you what it does etc and if verified by MS Vericon or another one etc. Also you can google and get a forum where others have also been commented and left solutions. I have quaranteened one process which is attached to Quicktime but not used by it. Also another process that was part of Media Player 7 and isnt uninstalled when it goes. Ended it as they say it uses heaps of ram and is part of checking on piracy or some such on music files which I never pirate anyway. Free or buy. good me - aint that interested in today's music to be honest - have vinyls from 50/60/70's.This program said I had drivers running that were dangerous so had to buy to see - now maybe true - but I will see how it goes without those two above running as some programs that want you to buy are telling porkies. (he was on last night - Inspector Frost movie repeat but great)I only have D Link DSL 200 for my broadband which is now 1500/264Great speed after 256/64 I can tell you.So will uninstall net framework as I don't have any other connections just this one computer. And see. Didnt know what they were for - so thanks Dencandy.I am a bit loath to do a reinstall and have yet to track down a disc anyway. Thanks so far for all the help. :D will keep informed as helps others I am sure as I have found myself. For myself I don't have NET Framework installed as I'm not linked to a network (other than a simple one for a broadband connection). Not quite 100% correct B) .NET Framework is a Runtime Environment, similar as Java RTE, but for applications designed with Visual Studio .NET. If you have any such applications, then you will need the .NET Framework, otherwise the application(s) cannot run.But unlike JRE, .NET Framework is not cumulative, and you may need more than one of the .NET Framework versions.Fortunately there are very, very few applications that need .NET Framework. In fact I have only one single public application, Filehippo Update Checker, that requires .NET Framework 2.0.So if you don't know if you need .NET Framework or not, then you probably don't need it. Lamb Chop
:( Well I removed Net framework 1.1. Now on this one it said didnt exist and then that administrator needed to do it ( Me) and then went off. Weird eh?then on 2 - got this on both remove and repair - same message."the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource which is unavailable. Need alternate path folder containing installation package MDP20-KB917283-X86.mps"Now I have a patch/fix KB 917283 installed. Then tried 3. Got set-up is loading. followed by a problem has been encountered and cancelling set-up. Sent a report Y?N.Weird seems like this is what is corrupt ? all these frameworks???If I dont use them - how did they become corrupted. PS sent me to sites on MS but I cant fathom these out most of the time so no help.
Lamb Chop
OOps half my task bar icons suddenly went missing one by one.So I have activated the programs and most are back. email. SuperAntispy set up monitor Maxmem DUMeter but not Avast Opened program but no icon and went to properties and made it always show as it had been altered to only when working etc. as had most others and also some have disappeared or gone to bottom section. All this happened just after trying to remove networks.Hope my Anti virus is working.Oh dear gremlins indeed are active on this computer indeed indeedy :( I will fiddle a bit more then get all twitchy and download new version of Avast and to the uninstall reinstall - AGAIN. Good job I have 1.5 GB in peak time doing all this. :D
andsome
Do you have someone local who could reinstall Windows for you? It all sounds like a complete mess. Best of luck. :D
Lamb Chop
The local computer store closed down when I went there - gone Will have to try to track down someone to help.I have got rid of Net Framework 3 - found an uninstaller program free and it did the job because it found the uninstaller for it. Cant do Frame Network 2 though also both patches cant be removed as the window installer say that the patch cannot be found. Does anyone know if I download all the above framework 2 and its patches if these will install over the corrupt ones and fix the problem? The funny little process found on Quick time was back today - read on the forum that went with the installer that it was a bit of a nuisance to get rid of and I also have Quick time popping up on my income bar ans till there when I again ended the process - but not on any of my program files or add or remove nor on Belarc. Weird. Just got a flyer about a course for pensioners and unemployed put on by the old Liberal government - says they have upgrades and free refurbished computers for those who qualify to take the course - not that I want to but may have a disc I can borrow as say for $169 will upgrade linux 10.3 to XP. I fit is the right edition. Also will upgrade XP home to Vista home for $39.
