I run Driver Detective monthly (but don't pay for the full service) which gives me some clues about which drivers need updating. But it's a tortuous business, trying to check drivers, isn't it? I rely on checking manufacturers' websites from time to time.But if there is one that works, I would like to know about it. I hate to sit on stale software, and that goes for device drivers as well. If the drivers that came with a piece of hardware don't work properly why were they issued? If they do work properly why replace them? -pops- Posted February 18, 2008 Report Share Posted February 18, 2008 The only time I will update or replace a driver is if the current one is in some way faulty.I've seen much damage caused to machines by injudicious updating - especially graphics card and sound card drivers. If you are intent on unnecessary updating of drivers, be especially careful of those issued by Microsoft - they are not the most reliable of providers. They are usually much older than those available from the manufacturers.I keep away from driver updates - unless it is to cure a known problem.If it ain't broke - don't fix it.I agree 100%! If a manufacturer issues a new driver version, it means that the previous version was either broken (bugs, security issues), or that the new version has new features or other improvements.There is close to 0 risk installing a new driver; you can always roll back the update if you are not happy with the result.But...
