The Labour government seem to have lost the plot - in Harold Wison's day they would have nationalised the lot and combined them into one enormous co-operative, headed by Lord Sainsbury.

Each locality would have a prefabricated superstore staffed by civil servants with the associated levels of service.

Oh for the good old days when we had "never had it so good".

I don't like them either.

In fact as I type this, management has her best pink wellies on and is out in the rear garden digging like mad to create some large beds for vegetables. She is determined we are going to go organic and be as self contained as possible.

I am not allowed to help her because I use a spade and it cuts worms in half - she uses a fork because it is more worm friendly. I am also accused of not being careful to remove all the stones that will result in bent or bifurcated carrots. I am not to be trusted - and my punishment is to be confined to the house where all I can do is read, watch TV, use the computer and drown my sorrows.

I did however make one huge contribution - I managed to buy some Kerrs Pinks seed potatoes - common in Ireland but as rare as hens teeth here. If you like floury spuds - they are the best by a country mile. Cry your eyes out King Edwards and Maris Piper.

Floury ones are OK for jacket spuds or even chips, but I much prefer smooth creamy ones for boiling or mashing.

You cannot boil a Kerrs Pink - unless you leave the skin on. It would boil away in the water.

For a perfect floury 'boiled' potato I do them in the combination microwave and then carefully remove the skin. I do the same for mash - mashed with some nice salty butter they are superb.

I don't like waxy potatoes at all - they have a texture I find disagreeable.
