Sloooow Computer

I have been asked by a friend to help with his slow 3 year old computer - running XP SP2, AVG Anti virus, AVG anti spyware, XP firewall.

When I booted - it took more than 5 minutes before the dektop loaded. Then when you click on any programme to open it - it takes ages to load. For example - I clicked to open Windows Explorer and it took just over 2 minutes to load. Then when you try to scroll down the folder tree - it takes a long time before the scroll starts. Whilst a programme is loading you cannot use the mouse for anything - the cursor moves over the screen but the hourglass is showing.

I used CCleaner which cleared out 80 Mb of rubbish and a lot of registry entries. This only made a slight difference.

I then did a full virus and malware scan - first using AVG followed by trend micro - nothing of consequence was found.

I then had a look at the task manager processes - found just one that looked iffy and removed it. Also checked the start programmes and deleted some that he didn't really need.

All to no avail - the computer is still swimming through treacle.

He says it has been like it for a long time - I tried a system restore back furthest possible - but that made things worse and I had to ondo it.

Any suggestions for what I do next. Could this be an imminemt hardware failure for example - if so - what?

I am sure that you have thought of this one, but it's worth a mention.....

STARTUP INSPECTOR

Thanks for that Irene - I have used Startup Inspector in the past but have never been impressed with it. Just for old times sake I just ran it on my new computer and it listed all the start-up stuff. However - every single one was marked "Unknown" even such things as Speedfan, Windows Defender, Vista Sidebar, Second Copy and some very common NVidia start up items.

18 months ago I used their web link to provide information about some of these - but it has not been taken into account.

It is useful if all you need is to list your start up items - but poor at guiding a nincompoop like me what is required and what can be deleted.

Did you clean it out? (dust) and maybe run A2.

Good point about dust - I just checked with my friend and he confirms that the computer is 3 years old and has never been opened for a clean. He also mentioned - for the first time - that it's not too bad first thing in the morning and gets steadily slower as the day goes by. There is a clue there methinks..................
