British Energy Group's 1200 megawatt Sizewell B nuclear reactor was shut down at midday Tuesday, a company spokeswoman said.

The shutdown was unplanned and there is no timeline for getting it back online, though a restart plan is underway, the spokeswoman said.

The shutdown at Sizewell follows recent problems at the company's Torness reactor, now back online, and Hinkley Point unit 7 which is still offline. Longer term problems persist in the boiler closure units at the Heysham and Hartlepool reactors, and these are not expected to be back until the second and third quarters of this financial year.AxP

Hundreds of thousands of homes suffered power cuts after a fault caused an unplanned shutdown at the Sizewell B nuclear power plant in Suffolk.

Homes and businesses in London, East Anglia, Cheshire and Merseyside were affected between 1100 BST and 1300 BST.

The shutdown cut off supplies to the National Grid within minutes of another plant - the coal-fired Longannet power station in Fife - going offlineBBC

Anyone caught out ? our power grid is on a real knife edge when it comes to peak load , we have very little overcapacity or rolling reserves (fast start gas turbines )If we dont start building soon , expect rolling blackouts or brownouts (ironic name innit ) soon .... welcome to the third world

Got to make a start on the barrage right now ...and f$%@ the ducks ....

Living slightly in the wilds, as I do, power cuts come with great regularity. I'm only 40 miles from Central London but, you would think sometimes that I'm on some remote island somewhere with an off shore generator on a small boat as the only power source.

We don't have terrestrial Channel 5 TV nor any prospect of digital TV either. It's also one of the most expensive areas to buy a house as well.

thats an appalling statement..... really pops ! ..and it is going to get worse ..because decisions are being deferred to the next government ...the thames estuary wind farm has gone up the jacksey , and there is still dithering over the Severn ....... I really think that we need to reopen some mines and build some coal fired plants

it is a problem if your sitting in the dark ..cats

Not really, because I shall be using up foreign produced dark, and so the country who owns the power supply company will be short of dark.

We are not unaccustomed to power failure round here. We are a bit like pops in that respect. There are so many low level power lines in this area (which is officially classed as "wooded farmland") that lines are often taken out by tree's and over grown hedges rubbing against them. Then of course unless someone knows, and tells the power company, where the problem lies, they seem to take ages to find it..

Newsnight tonight ....." we've been lucky the last few winters as they have been so short and mild , we have only limited reserve peak capacity , expect the possibility of cuts during a bad one "

heh ...surprise surprise , current existing magnox reactors are going to cost twice as much to decommission as previously thought ! , expect £140bn , makes northen rock just a piss in the wind .....

there is no more money in the nations coffers , hes sold the nations gold reserves off cheap ..

..expect more stealth taxes or the country goes bust ....hidden as a green agenda

Perhaps he will dig into party funds to help out. Or even do as his father used to do.....go round with a collection box.(Perhaps this is where he gets his sense of values from...when the money is all gone go round with the box again.)

I read that's what led to Thatcher and the Tories gaining power in 1979 as Labour bankrupted the country!

Let's hope it doesn't happen again.
