Alan2273 Posted May 29, 2008 Report Share Posted May 29, 2008 I have just been given an eleven year old computer, when I fired it up it was running Windows 95.The specifications are Pentium 233Mhz processor, 32mb SDR Ram, 2GB hard drive, , the motherboard is a Gigabyte with onboard graphics and has a riser card for PCI & ISA slots. It also has an Ethernet controller and two USB ports. Obviously the Ethernet and USB ports will not work with Windows 95.I am going to try to run it as a server, but I need a CD drive as it only has a floppy so I am having a look on e-bay. Belatucadrus Posted May 29, 2008 Report Share Posted May 29, 2008 Ethernet shouldn't be a problem with W95, though USB support is a bit of a bind to enable and usually only worth it if you know that the peripherals have suitable drivers.I've still got a machine of similar spec, though among all the other upgrades I inflicted on it, I changed to W98 for the improved USB compatibility. Unsafe if you want the internet: As it doesn't support IE6 or 7 there's a strong argument for using Firefox or Opera. I'd also be tempted to find an alternative media player to WMP. But that said as long as you've got a suitable firewall and Anti Virus it should be fine. Besides which OS is not going to be top priority for exploit writers, the obsolete one.Avast is W95 compatibleTiny Firewall Old version and also unsupported but still works a treat. Link should be direct to download.OldApps is a good place to look up old versions of software that no longer support W95 in their latest incarnation. I hope that you're not planning on using the server as a web server...not only will it be horribly slow, but most-likely crash and be hacked.If anything, the only way I see that you can use the computer you mentioned as a server is a backup server, in a LAN setting.Though your backup will be limited...with a small 2GB hard drive...An external hard drive would be the better solution in my opinion....just what are you trying/going to do with it is my question?
