andsome Posted July 3, 2008 Report Share Posted July 3, 2008 A friend had a virus removed by a local company, and they sold him AVG 8 security suite and installed it for him. He told me today that after a few days he could no longer get on line. I had a look at the set up for him, and found that the firewall was set to block all. There were only three settings available, block all, allow all and stand alone computer. The INTERNET can only be accessed with allow all set. I ran a scan on Shields up and almost every port was open, and the security FAILED. It is of course impossible to run the same scan in any other setting, because access is barred. Even with allow all set and saved, the setting reverts to block all after re booting. This program was driving me nuts. Irene Posted July 4, 2008 Report Share Posted July 4, 2008 As you are probably aware, I have AVG 8.0.However, it's the Free version not the purchased suite.When you mention the firewall, do you mean an AVG Firewall?I don't think mine has one - I use Comodo, as recommended by you some time ago. :D These are my components....(the only one which I have disabled is the LinkScanner, because I already use McAfee SiteAdvisor and it took forever to load web pages whilst both investigated each page). He was told that it was the best available, which I would question, but there you go, they probably earn a good commission. :DI suggested to him that he had perhaps been sold a pup, and offered to close down the firewall and install Comodo, just leaving the rest of the security suite in place. He will do this today, but I don't think he will be able to follow instructions, he is a complete novice. he will probably have to wait until I can go round again. I was hoping to get some tips on here as to how to sort out the problem myself. There were only three choices, block all, allow all or stand alone computer. No matter what is set, it reverts back to block all on a reboot. Dencandy Posted July 5, 2008 Report Share Posted July 5, 2008 Partly following your advice, andsome, I installed the ESET/NOD32 security suite for a trial 4 weeks ago and have just confirmed the full purchase. Not only does it perform exceptionally well in leading a-v tests, but it gets in with the job very efficiently & unobtrusively. I've even found out how to switch off being informed every time it makes an update. :) Now that AVG have capured a large share of the market & are planning to pull out of the freeware market (they won't be providing updates for their free products after December 31st) I fear they are going the way of Norton - putting the prospect of making money above the quality of the product. Not that I've anything against making money (everyone's got to live), but the way they rushed out AVG8 without having tested it properly (not on Vista, for example) made me wary of the path they now seem to be following. :( Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

We'll have to wait and see if a free version of AVG8 continues through 2009, but there's no indication it will not - which is good news for those who use it. The following instructions are from the AVG 8.0 Technical FAQ: Editing or deleting current rule open AVG User Interface -> menu Tools -> Firewall settings expand Profiles -> your profile (e.g. Standalone computer) -> Applications click on the Mozilla application rule that you want to change click "Delete this rule" If you need more help, see the article Configuring AVG Internet Security (Firefox Support) or contact AVG Support.P.S.
