I tripped over the power cable and pulled the base unit over. The computer didnt crash, but exited the game i was on and gave me some boxes with text i didnt really understand. When i restarted it did CHKDSK action before it let me log in to windows, after this i logged in and everything was fine. When i came on it later, it did another CHKDSK then let me log in, but now the internet isnt working and apparently i dont have an IP address according to msn when i try to sign in, i am using the same internet connection on my old computer and obviously it is fine so i dont know what the issue is on my other computer. i would be grateful if you could help me with this problem.Please note i am not too knowledgeable when it comes to computers.Thanks. When a hard drive is powered down its read/write heads are parked and in a protected condition. If the drive was spinning (even if it wasn't active) the heads are free to move and they are VERY, VERY delicately balanced (think precision watches and more so).You may be able to get something out of the hard drive but, it will be unreliable and almost certainly on its way to the hardware depository in the sky.It is likely that only the hard drive is damaged - that is the only mechanically precision instrument in a computer. Other parts may have become loose and an be plugged back in. Fans, if damaged, can easily be replaced.Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Did you have a backup of your system? Did you have a backup of your system?the thing i cant get my head around was that everything worked when i restarted my computer after the second check. After the 2nd check thats when i lost the internet. Fortunately i dont have anything too important on it at the minute, but getting money together for a new hd is the hard part. Scarecrow Man Posted July 13, 2008 Report Share Posted July 13, 2008 Hard drives are cheap these days. Shop around. You can generally find them for less than $1 / GB. A 80GB hard drive at the local shop is $45. That's CDN dollars. May be different in your area.Chances are your drive being run through a chkdsk means something was corrupted. You can try to run WinSock Fix to replace any missing files damaged by corruption. Might get you back online temporarily, but don't consider this a fix. Go get yourself a new drive. I recommend Western Digital, and if you can't do that, Seagate. Stay away from Maxtor. Even though the Maxtor price tag looks better, you will end up replacing it 3 or 4 times before your Western Digital fails, if it ever fails.
