Tony
Hi All OK this little problem is starting to bug me now About 2 months ago i fitted a new hard drive and installed a fresh installation of XP home, all is fine, apart from Internet Explorer 6 & Outlook 2000 drop the connection after a couple of hours of non use. It is a DSL connection and the PC is connected through a Net Gear 314 Gateway Router, to the DSL modem. It is only IE & Outlook that has the problem, if i don't use either of them for a couple of hours, when i do goto use them IE just (after about 10 seconds) gives a 404 page can not be found error, and outlook just says connection to the server has failed. so i restart the machine and all is fine again for a couple of hours. P2P software stays connected and i can still FTP with Smart FTP. All the connection settings seem fine to me, i have told IE to never disconnect. The settings in the router or fine cos there is no problems with the other PC connected to it running W2K. The problem happens even is i leave IE open on a page and then come back to it later on. Does anybody know anything about this problem? Cheers & Thanks Tony
Guest Nellie2
this is all I could find on the knowledge base and I suppose it is worth a go. But I connect through a router and I don't have any problems with forward slashes!!!http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;296275
Agent Smith
Hi Tony, the only other thing which comes to mind at the moment, is XP's built in firewall. I recently fixed a problem for a shop who had 8 networked printers. They would print ok when first logged in, but after about 20 mins they all went offline, needing the user to login again. By turning off the firewall the problem went away.It may be worth you doing the same. Try dissabling XP's built in firewall for the connection and see what happens.Regards. Mr. M.
