Any (ex) AOL users ???

An old friend has just changed his ISP from AOL to BT and has asked me about migrating his AOL 9.0 Favourites, AOL Contact e-mail addresses and Personal Filing Cabinet e-mail folders into Outlook Express + IE.

I've never used AOL, and as he is some distance away and not very computer savvy I wondered if there was any software available which could do this easily for him. I've googled and found a $24.95 application called ePreserver.

I've also found a (last updated in 2001 :( ) set of free tools from AOLeave

which are supposed to work for older versions of AOL - not sure about recent ones.

I cannot of course test either of these solutions. Has anyone got any experience of using them ?

Or is there any simple way of doing the job manually ?

back in the day when I used AOL the browser was piggy backed onto IE I believe. Favourite transfer was accomplished by File > export >as HTML, IE can still sucessfully import favourites from an HTML file.

The address book may be able to File >Export >as a csv file, OE should then be able to import it, but it may be possibel to set OE to import automatically from his AOL account, depends on whether AOL is web based (like hotmail) or on the local pc.

Again similar for the personal filing cabinets, Curlywhirly I believe had AOL until fairly recently.

From what I can establish, the "export" option is no longer in AOL 9.0, and the Personal Filing Cabinet is in some AOL proprietary format.

I usually end up printing them out and then feeding them back into the new set up manually as required. It is surprising how many never get fed back. in.

Up until May 2006 anyway :D

I can't remember how I imported my AOL favourites unfortunately :(
