AlanHo Posted September 18, 2008 Report Share Posted September 18, 2008 I am just back from a very enjoyable week in Tenerife - we stayed at one of the Sol group hotels and found it to be excellent value. Nice location, good car parking, big rooms, spotlessly clean, evening entertainment and quite good buffet style breakfasts and dinners.However - like just about every other hotel I have ever stayed in in various places around the world - the bread toasters were rubbish. Why is it that hotels are incapable of providing toasters that actually brown the bread - rather than just eject it still white but now dried out. There were two toasters in the breakfast room - both being the moving belt type. One of them needed the bread to be passed through three times to get it slightly brown and the other needed two passes. I am a morning toast addict and found it very frustrating..... It is something Mr Brown would be well advised to address with some urgency - it may even get him some extra votes and take people's minds off other matters.. Toast, I would expect is not a normal part of the repertoire of many countries and they thus don't have a clue about making it.Other examples of culinary abominations are tea made with boiling milk instead of water or boiled eggs where, on removing the top of the shell, half of the contents of the egg flows out over the plate. In this hotel the knobs had been removed and the spindles locked to a specific setting. I sometimes wonder whether the american based hotel chains buy their toasters from the USA which are designed for 110 volts - hence being rather feeble when run on a 250 voly supply.The only good toasters I can recall were in the Bahrain Sheraton, one of the Marriots in Dubai and a Travel Inn in Truro.I expect a 4 star hotel in any country to cater for international tastes - and toast is one of them. It wasn't just us Brits - even the Spanish, Germans and Russians were moaning about the rubbish machines. Hotel management just shrugged and suddenly lost the ability to understand English.
