Should I go ahead and upgrade to Vista?

Hey everyone.

I just bought a new graphics card, and I was actually considering buying a couple more gigs of ram (I already have two), and upgrading to Vista since I have a DirectX 10 card now, and the extra graphics would be nice...

I've also been thinking of staying with XP until Microsoft stops officially supports it.

Suggestions?

This is something only you can decide.

Personally, I would never upgrade a pre-existing computer to a later operating system. The machine was built to work with a certain system and changing that system to something that it wasn't designed for can introduce all sorts of problems, not least that of not being able to take full advantage of the improvements inherent in the new.

I will be missing out completely on Vista. I have built a few machines that use it and, from what I've seen during setting up, Vista doesn't hold any advantages for me so I am staying with XP. Others will disagree with my view but then, I'm not into high speed gaming and such like that might need the "improvements" of Vista.

Do you have any DirectX 10 supporting games, if not then the answer is still no as you aren't going to see any benefit. While Vista is more secure than XP, it does require more resources and is slower than XP.

It has been my philosophy at work and at home to stick with XP.

XP works with many applications, and a relatively small number of those have been upgraded for Vista compatibility.

Most of the problems posted on here and other forums are caused as a result of upgrading one system designed to run on the program supplied, to another as pops has stated. W98 to XP, XP to Vista etc. Leave well alone. :D

a clean install with SP1, with good hardware, can be a good experience. If you set all of the appearance options for "performance", and disable Vista, you get a nice system that has performance almost as good as XP, and it does look a lot nicer in many ways. I don't think I would upgrade any machine that isn't a dual core or above, however.

I've got a quad core running vista premium and a 3.4ht pentium on XP ..... Its the XP one that I spend most of my time on .... I find vista frustrating ....use XP and skip vista for the next upgrade in 2 years .... vista is slow and not as stable

I could handle vista, I built this computer so it's not "Designed" for anything, and I do have many DX10 compatible games.

Vista is a very good OS created by Microsoft

If you are using any later version of windows then Vista is the best

I generally like everything new. I was among the first users who switched to XP in 2001, even though it was horribly raw back then and had very serious hardware and software compatibility issues. It was really worth of the discomfort back then, for many different reasons I won't elaborate here.

So, when Vista came around, I gladly and readily embraced it, having absolutely no prejudices. Alas, it turned out to be a big disappointment, which I frankly didn't expect.

Main problem is in the games area. Being a dedicated gamer, I hoped Vista + DX10 would open a whole new era in gaming. I was wrong.

Everything I tested, every single game, new or old, performs approximately 30% worse in Vista. I know there are some results on the Web claiming Vista is superior in particular games (World of Warcraft, for instance), but I wasn't able to confirm that. Everything I saw so far indicates the contrary.

I have the latest version, with SP1, and my hardware meets all the requirements Vista needs, but still it's nowhere as fast as XP.

I repeat: this is an opinion from a user with absolutely no prejudice to Vista or any other Microsoft products. On the contrary, I eagerly anticipated it and was even ready to close my eyes on every possible problem that any newly born OS might have. But the performance issue is something I cannot close my eyes on.

So, if you are a gamer, my answer is big NO. Dual-boot? Sure, why not. Vista is a great thing to explore, while you have a safety haven nearby such as XP. Engaging with Vista on the full scale, burning all the bridges down? Noway man. Not yet.

I am at present in the process of selecting components for a new computer, with the kind help of another forum member. I have already bought the installation disc. It is good old reliable XP. I can't afford to mess about with something which has caused so many complaints. :D

Good for you, andsome. You're gonna save a lot of neurons by sticking to good ol' XP, trust me. :D

Pity though. I was kinda hoping with this new OS Microsoft would make the snobby Mac users finally shut up, but now they are laughing at us, PC users, even louder. :lol:
