Family words

A few years ago, Doug - an old friend - developed a (deserved) reputation in his family for spilling things and dripping gravy down his shirt etc. His wife would sigh and say "Doug's done it again".

Some time ago at a family party, one of his 4 year old grand-daughters dropped something on her dress and said "look mommy - I've dugged on my dress". Thus was born a family saying - if you dripped gravy down your front or splashed red wine onto your aunt's vintage lace table cloth etc - you had "dugged".

Due to regular exposure to the saying over the years I was infected and found myself using the term. Imagine my surprise when last Sunday I attended a family party and one of my fairly distant in-law relatives spilt wine down his shirt and exclaimed "Oh bugger - I've dugged on my shirt". It transpired that I was identified as the spreader of the term and it was in regular use not just in my family but had spread to in-laws and friends quite widely.

I suppose this is how some words got invented.

Do you have any odd words used in your family that we could all adopt.....?

Stunge - which is something dense and indigestible such as cold bread and butter pudding.

Don't know where it came from but it is a well used family word which is now a noun for bread and butter pudding - hot or cold.

My son remarked on it the other day at the other place.

Similar to pops' "strunge" we have "grummock",

Our's relates to a savoury concoction which is vaguely related to Yorkshire pudding, savoury scone and cheese and tomato flan.

We had managements god daughter from IOM staying with us about 25 years ago, and she (management) was preparing a meal in the kitchen

Little Heidi asked what it was that we were going to have to eat. I did not know so I said it was going to be that well known and well loved favourite called grummock.

It turned out to be one of management's mother's inventions that up until that time had never really had a name.

We still have, it but we now have a name for it.
