Hb_Kai
Every time processes get too much for my laptop now it makes this funny noise like a hairdryer. It's not coming from the speakers but coming from the actual hardware inside the laptop, I took the covers off the bottom to make sure that nothing is trapped anywhere inside of anything but that's all OK, so I know it has got to be a hardware problem but I can't think of anything it could be.It does on for about 4-5 seconds on start-up, stops until I log on, then the first application I run after letting it boot properly it starts again. It has only been doing it since this morning which this morning when it was making this noise I shut it down and started it up again a couple minutes after and then a few hours later it started doing it again and now it doesn't stop.Anyone know what it could be? EDIT:- Oh, it does it even more when the processes get too much too, which usually it just goes slow because the small amount of RAM inside it... But it's never done this until today. Boris
It sounds as if the bearing has gone in the cooling fan ?If so you need to get the fan repaced ASAP !

Hb_Kai
Fujitsu Siemens AMILO ProJust in case it's something rather than the fan;XP SP2 Home EdIntel Celeron M processor 1.50GHz192MB RAMWhen I took the back covers off, I had a look around where the sound was coming from and I don't think it was coming from the fan either. It has stopped now but it's going unusually slow.I haven't done anything for this to go wrong so it doesn't make sense. Are there any types of viruses/malicious programs that can tamper with the BIOS settings making the clock rate too high for the processor to burn out or anything do you know?I think whilst it's not making that noise I'll check the hard drive anyway to make sure. :D
Dencandy
Make a tube like an ice-cream cone with a piece of paper and keep it handy for the next time the noise starts. Hold the wide end to your ear and use the narrow end to scan the machine to help locate the noise (I think -pops- suggested this idea some time ago). If you're a doctor you can use your stethoscope instead.
-pops-
For anyone who might do regular repairs/investigations on computers, you can buy stethoscopes on eBay very cheaply.
