Info on building a pc

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am going to build myself a pc and before I buy the components I need a bit of help.

Mainly to do with the mobo and cpu, can anybody tell me what to look out for when buying these two, such as how will the cpu fit the mobo.

Also when getting a case, i take it I need one that fits the form factor of the mobo?

Thanks, help appreciated

There is a great deal of information on the CCL website http://www.cclonline.com/ . In the catalogue pages each item has an information page attached (a letter i in a button). This is a great help sorting out compatability.

Be aware that most new motherboards now seem to be SATA, though some still have one EIDE socket. Also some seem to have no on board Floppy socket.

Although it's quite daunting to build your first computer, it really isn't difficult provided everything is done in a logical manner without taking shortcuts (until you're familiar in doing it. at least).

I would encourage almost anyone with some dexterity to have a go. I've built hundreds but, I'm doing less and less now as my arthritis and eyesight are preventing me from doing the more delicate parts. I get my elder granddaughter to do that for me - we make a good team and she's very keen.

There's nothing quite like the sense of satisfaction you get when you power up your machine and it springs into life - which is the norm, despite what is often said. Of all those I've built, only two wouldn't power up. Some didn't work properly first go but that was usually my fault (missed a bit out) and were quickly cured.

The biggest problems I seem to have is with working out the little plugs for the hard drive light etc. and installing windows, on the one I have now it was with a SATA drive, with the last one it was reusing a partitioned Hard drive and XP wasn't happy until I reformatted it as one drive.

On a new build, I always use new components. Fine, you can use old hardware as addons later but I feel that the basic machine should be "virgin".

I get young Claire from down the village to help with that. She's usually very good. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Voyant.
