Gordon
Hi I am now running the defrag on Vista. It has been 5 hours now and still no end. Its really dumb that there is no control of percentage finished or what ever else...How long do you think I should expect? Got HD 160Gb -> 90Gb used. Vista running on Core i7
Hb_Kai
A badly over-clogged hard drive can take up to that amount of time.I'd use a third-party defragger rather than the Microsoft one though. I'm not sure what my thoughts about that one are just yet. :)
Gordon
Yeah well I made my thoughts about the Vista defrag right now since its the first time I am trying it... With XP it didnt take so long.Defrag still running 6,5 hours by the way. On the other hand the Vista one can be run on background Still next time I am going with third party app. probably O&O defrag...

Sunray
Hi I am now running the defrag on Vista. It has been 5 hours now and still no end. Its really dumb that there is no control of percentage finished or what ever else...How long do you think I should expect? Got HD 160Gb -> 90Gb used. Vista running on Core i7 920You can have slightly more control using the command line interface. bring up an admin level command prompt and type, for eg., defrag C: -a -vwhich will give you a detailed analysis of the disk situation. There are other similar commands to select specific settings for the defrag.Ofcourse, it's still as slow as ever to actually defrag. :D Back when I had Vista until a couple of months ago, I used to run Diskeeper 2009 Professional edition on it. Diskeeper worked really good: fast, transparent and much more effective than the Vista defragger.
CurlyWhirly
Back when I had Vista until a couple of months ago, I used to run Diskeeper 2009 Professional edition on it. Diskeeper worked really good: fast, transparent and much more effective than the Vista defragger.I am using that now on Vista and am very pleased with it - it was well worth the money. When I was on XP I used to use Diskeeper 9 and that worked much quicker than the Windows defragger as well. andsome
I have tried several programs, and Diskeeper is by far and away the best. I am using Diskeeper 10. :D
