Linux live desktop CD's

Recommended Posts

I want to run a live Linux desktop cd on my Laptop .I tried Sante FE .It wiped out my Win2k Server /2000 partitions. I ghosted Windows 2000 on the laptop ,which is a IBM Thinkpad w Intel P4 and Centrino Tech. I want to try again but am a Newbie and need info. Also ,I need to know what setting to burn the distros to the cd when I use Nero Burning Rom. Should I use the udf/iso ,bootable cd or data file setting ? I have Knoopix ,Goblinx , Mephis and Morphix waiting in the wings. I am fascinated with running a desktop without installing for using Linux Thanks to all

Burn it as an ISO, bootable CD and data will not work.

You say you wiped out your W2000, when you booted of a live Cd, how did you manage that when the live CD runs in RAM, unless you tried to install it , there is no way it could have hosed your partitions.

If you are just starting with Linux, I would advise you to start with Ubuntu, Linux Mint or PCLOS, as Knoppix & Mephis are not really beginner friendly.

Just a comment :)

I've just tried out the latest Mint (v6) and booting from the Live CD using a very basic rig (Athlon64 3000+ with 1 gig PC3200 with wired network connection), it always seems to hang after the nice green bar finishes and it goes into the graphical lines at the loading Bluetooth bit.

knoppix is nice. Puppylinux is light if you want something simple and fast.

I don't think you will come to much harm using Ubuntu in the manner suggested by Alan2273 above.

edit:- Do not think the speed at which it operates from a live disk is in any way comparable with the REAL thing. There are many magnitudes of difference between a live disc and a proper installation.
