AlanHo Posted May 27, 2009 Report Share Posted May 27, 2009 Friends have sent me 3 home made DVD's of video footage they took at our wedding.I would like to save the videos onto my hard drive in a suitable format so that I can edit them and compile the best scenes onto one DVD using Vista Windows Movie Maker.I know how to do the editing once the videos are on my hard drive but cannot recall how to transfer the video VOB files from the DVD's to my hard drive in avi or wmv format.Help would be appreciated. Turn OFF your screen saver, it will slow your .VOB to .AVI conversion down for hours.2. Close any program running in the background, especially if you have a slower computer.3. Re-boot the computer just before the conversion , it will give you the best condition as possible.For you to be able to convert VOB to AVI you should have a converter that is installed in your PC. You can download the converter in the internet how ever you have to order or pay for you to be able to download the full version, lucky if you find free download but it has an expiration. Sundays))Thanks for that - I downloaded Avidemux and tried it out but cannot get it to convert the DVD file to anything I can edit on my hard drive. Via Google I have found a couple of programmes that do the job perfectly - but the free downloads instal a trial version that will only convert files of a couple of minutes duration. AlanHo Posted May 27, 2009 Author Report Share Posted May 27, 2009 Nice try catgate - unfortunately whilst both programs will do the conversion, one has a file size limit and the other puts a watermark across the screen until you "cough up da dosh".I now doubt that I will find a free program that does the job and will have to find a friend of a friend with the necessary - or dig deep into the piggy bank. AlanHo Posted June 9, 2009 Author Report Share Posted June 9, 2009 I have now given up on so called free software - it is all either crippled in some way or writes a watermark on the end result until you pay. The worse feature is that you have to install the software before you find this out - up until then all the indications are that it is freeware.I posted the problem on the other place and whilst the replies did not dierectly provide a solution - they provided some strong clues.I had tried using Windows Movie maker to import the video vob file from the DVD drive - but it would not do that. After copying the DVD files to my hard drive Windows Movie Maker imported the VOB file OK - but was only willing to process the first 20 seconds of the file. It appears that my friend shot the video in sections and his camera treated each section as a seperate scene. Windows Movie maker imported the whole file but recognised only the first scene.I then tried using the movie maker feature in Nero 9. It imported the whole VOB file but displayed each scene seperately - which enabled me to place them on the time line and export the video to an AVI file.I now have the whole video on my hard drive in a form acceptable to Windows Movie maker allowing me to edit it and merge video from othe contributors.
