Leonard
There was some talk on the Farmers' Market that older, 6 years?, Microsoft programs were now "gifted" for Community Support use in these difficult times. Are these free downloads or CDs?Are they supported? It seems a very noble guesture by Mr Gates. Maybe get him an invitation to the White House?Certainly a great publicity benefit, helping the unemployed and poorer childrenAny news? -pops-
If you are thinking about things like MS Office, why have to tolerate out of date software when you can get the latest office suites for free? What I am thinking of is OpenOffice - http://www.openoffice.org/ which is a superb suite of programs all for no charge. It is compatible with the offerings from Mr Gates. There is plenty of free software available - much of it very good indeed and not out of date. If it isn't office software you are seeking, tell us what your requirements are and someone will come up with something, I'm sure.
Belatucadrus
Microsoft do have some free stuff, file viewers, toys and code compilers that are available to download and while I know they do some very nice deals price wise for students, I've never heard of them giving away anything with regard to office suites or operating systems no matter how old they may be. It would be interesting to see if these rumours have some genuine meat on the bones.
andsome
I would definitely have a look at Open Office if Office 2000 would not run in XP. It's worth bearing in mind for a new computer in a few years time, if Office 2000 will not run in the operating system of that day.
