How to update BIOS in laptop?

Recommended Posts

Welcome to the Windows Forum.

There are various ways the BIOS can be updated; there should be instructions on the manufacturer's website from where you download(ed) the update.

Caution: if a BIOS update goes wrong, your PC may no longer be able to do anything; some people here say that it becomes a very expensive paperweight. If you do not have a good reason to update your BIOS, do not attempt it!

If you really need the update installed, make 100% sure that

  1. you have the correct update for your system;
  2. you have understood the instructions how to install it.

I fully agree with what ʇɐb states.

If have the slightest doubt of what you are doing in updating the BIOS, don't do it. It is very rarely necessary and, unless there is something amiss with the current BIOS, updating most likely won't achieve a lot.

Oh, I have updated MANY, MANY computers' BIOS before Y2K - it was a MUST. And since it was so easy then, I do not hesitate to install when a new BIOS update becomes available. At least if I can see any improvement or bug fixes in it.

Still, I do not recommend it to anyone who does not know exactly what s/he is doing.

That includes me. :D

Usually BIOS updates come with a readme of some sort either with the downloaded update or on the website where you're downloading this BIOS update from. It may be best, also, that you download the BIOS update from your manufacturer's website.

The only thing I ever update is my drivers and that's rarely too. I don't like touching BIOS settings :lol:

I've updated the BIOS only the one time in the 8 years+ of owning a PC.

This was when I had a Gigabyte motherboard with it's dual BIOS system so I had a backup BIOS if anything went wrong!

The 2 PC's I'm using now don't have a Gigabyte motherboard so I would be reluctant to risk updating the BIOS unless it was essential.
