Bronson was best known for his tough guy image, in films like the 'Death Wish' series and 'The Dirty Dozen.' Charles Bronson started life Charles Buchinski one of the fifteen children of a Lithuanian coalminer. Ever the tough guy, Bronson was a coalminer himself before joining the army during World War Two. It was only after the war that he got into acting taking his first film role in 1950. By the sixties his screen presence was becoming apparent in The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, The Dirty Dozen and Once Upon a Time in the West. But he will perhaps best be remembered for the role of Paul Kersey in the Deathwish movies. In these he was a man pushed too far by an assault on his family. He walked the mean streets of New York meting out rough justice to criminals. By this time Bronson was considered one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. He also starred opposite his wife Jill Ireland, she died in 1990 after as long battle with breast cancer. Bronson himself died at the weekend of pneumonia, having been in hospital for some weeks. His movie persona was nearly always the strong, silent, tough guy. He once said he often thought how lovely it would be to lean on a mantlepiece with a cocktail in his hand and let the dialogue do the acting.
