Lamb Chop Posted November 20, 2009 Report Share Posted November 20, 2009 Having been attacked by something that completely destroyed my D Link where I was unable to uninstall because it was still installed but on start no connect and in connections itself only LAN left and the wizard for connection only had Lan too - I was stuck and my Avast wasn't working and when I tried to open it - had a problem and no connection to ask how to!So had to sent for a technician who looked and took it away for 4 days and said fixed but he needed it for a few more to update but I was needing the computer back for work and printing etc and could update it myself and save him the trouble. So he brought it back not happy but I paid him what he asked. What he was trying to update was AVG Free and it just wouldnt and then I checked and it was a very old version. So had to go download Avast without any protection.I did ask him what attacked me but he said had an infection and too many for him to keep up with and grumpy as said he wanted more time to be happy giving it back!Also I was not happy when I found that he had taken off Super Anti Spyware Pro with real time protection - Spyware Blaster with passive protection and WinPatrol Pro system protection saying they were no good. He also rubbished Avast. He did leave me Spybot search and destroy saying best program.Ignored MAM thank goodness.He had also got rid of Firefox and configured Internet Explorer 8 so I had a lovely time having to put it all right and all back together deciding one us was out of date! I use Comodo as a firewall these days and he said never heard of it. Everything is working great now.But he did leave me with D Link Program file plus a lot of part files and/or drivers in my docs and settings so I moved them to computer and D Link into Program Files and hoped that this works out - scanners since haven't put out messages saying cant scan etc except for the usual ones.Got me to thinking as I haven't found a back up program that works with me at the helm. I have looked at a lot but they are not user friendly !any ideas of ones which even I cant muck up and also how do I check them out - used to be able to put a floppy with them on into and hit directory and it would tell me what I had but last lot of discs I did - double dutch ! so mucked them up.Also do give me a boost and tell me I am not mad with my choice of protection? Shakes one when a tech says what you have gotten from mainly here and ratings is rubbish!Got me thinking also maybe should bite the bullet and buy Nod 32 Anti Virus as it is rated higher than free ones. Had a look at the site here and two which one I thought wow ask 'ansome!End of tale guys thanks for bearing with me in my should be Senior Red Headed Moment actually! -pops- Posted November 20, 2009 Report Share Posted November 20, 2009 Sorry to hear about your problems, Lamb Chop.Most people find Acronis very good as a backup program. It gets more user friendly with each edition.The best thing to do is to keep your backup on a separate hard drive so that if the worst happens, you have a nice clean backup to re-install from. Lamb Chop Posted November 21, 2009 Author Report Share Posted November 21, 2009 Thanks Pops - I had wondered if extra HD was the route to go.Do I need a spare USB port to connect one to?Any idea who makes a good one?short of USB's and last hub I tried - Logitec - didnt work and got another same thing only 3 ports worked on one and 2 on another. maybe my computer was infected at the time - who knows. -pops- Posted November 21, 2009 Report Share Posted November 21, 2009 For external drives, hubs aren't a very good idea and I've not had much success with them.You don't need your backup drive connected all the time - in fact it's best if it isn't so, if you can "borrow" a USB port from something else ( a printer, say) then do your backup, disconnect the backup drive (according to the correct procedure!!!!) and re-plug in the printer (or whatever it was).Regarding external hard drives, there are lots available and I doubt there is much to choose between them. I always go for Comodo to protect my Windows. I've never had a problem with it.But it does sound like that guy doesn't really know what he's talking about. Spybot S&D is good but not as good as most other Spyware/Malware protection programs.IE 8 - everyone except Andsome knows its faults. Firefox is pretty good and is safe, especially if you've tampered with it here and there and know what you're doing when trying them things out. I love Firefox - just don't get why anyone sticks with IE 8 or anything of the previous versions. My Secunia PSI which is a lovely program that makes sure I have the updated/patched programs - all secure etc - says IE is unable to be patched as unsolvable until M$ does the deed. I like Comodo but must admit at times it drives me nuts with the alerts - click on Ok and it comes back again and again adding to the number of times this alert has been made.I reckon nothing gets past it! How did it happen, given that you have several layers of protection?I'm not a shareholder in NOT32/ESET, but I've been using it for 18 months now and nothing has ever got past it. It also includes antimalware and a firewall all built into a single unified utility. It's relatively easy to change the default settings to your liking and won't keep bothering you with warnings about harmless connections.Since you live outside the EU and North America you might find you can get a 2-year subscription for the price of a one year one. Lamb Chop Posted November 23, 2009 Author Report Share Posted November 23, 2009 Dencandy - was about to log off for the night and noticed a update window (similar to the one for I Tunes) - for Download Accelerator and it had been nagging as I had old old version so thought okay do it and get rid of nag - stupid - whatever it was - it wasn't download from DAP as afterwards remembered they go to site to download not a window. Tech didn't know what it was saying infections lot of them due to Avast as he favoured AVG Free. Said too many to have to take in etc.What happened loss of D Link program file - in the computer the file was empty. But when I tried to uninstall it - couldn't as it was there. Wizard only allowed LAN set up and Start had lost the connect link. Avast would not load. Could work on it for anything else but not able to connect although D Link modem lit up and connected most likely - light on as if. There's so much poorly designed and untested downloads around these days even with Microsoft's own updates, let alone third party utilities. Download accelerators are often dodgy, containing spyware, adware and file sharing without telling you. Will have to go get a new one as the tech may have taken it off - he took Firefox off along with so many other programs.I am not impressed since I own the computer - maybe I am strange - but think it is mine so my choice of programs - bit of a cheek just taking them off. Some he uninstalled but others were just not there but when I loaded say Winpatrol it then had two on it so had to uninstall and see if gone and it was - weirder. Currently just changed my email address main one which only a few trusted (I thought) had but made a mistake on giving it when buying meds off e pharmacy and they sent me their catalogue too and somewhere along the line they were hacked or sold on their list as I have been bombarded up to 80 a day offering me viagra and other pills plus all sort of genital extensions which are not suitable for females - tried all sorts - mail washer and then paid for spam to be stopped - but it didn't get it so did the last ditch stand. Changed address and now have to notify those I want to hear from! Also signed up for hotmail for future on line buys so that ai never get asked if I need Viagra again! surprise is ended up with a hotmail.co.uk email address!!
