Program start-ups upon opening

When I start up, I have a lot of programs which get started/opened.

Some programs I don't need and this slows down my start-up.

How do I prevent some of these programs to open?

A lot of us on here use Windows Start Up Inspector follow this link Start Up Inspector and it's free but you can donate.

Or you can use the windows built int one, although it doesn't give as much information as Startup inspector, I use the windows one myself still. If you're on XP, it's going to be a lot of googling, but on Vista and after they give a description.

To go there, press the win key and r at the same time and then msconfig in the box that will pop-up. Then you go to the startup tab and uncheck the programs you don't want running.

Try crap cleaner, it gives you the options of enable, disable or delete startup programs and it is free.

The advantage of Start Up Inspector as recommended by doug is that it includes some advice about what start up programs are important and what aren't.

I just found your forum and my first search took me to this thread that sent me in the right direction for solving my problem about unwanted programs on start up. Thanks so very much. :)

Well, I tried Startup Inspector. My experience was the same as one of the reviews that I read. It failed to recognize the programs that start up on boot and therefore didn't rate (1 through 4) as to whether it would be appropriate to delete them from the start up.

I then tried CCleaner. It offered a lot of cleanup stuff, that I used, but did not provide an obvious way to delete programs from the startup.

All in all, things are better, but I still have to figure out what all the programs are in my start up.

As noted above,I use the built in application System Configuration as well to controll what starts at Windows boot.

I check once in a while to make sure programs don't replace themselves in there when used-which some will.

Personally I only allow AV/AM and Sidebar in this area.Other apps or programs start as I call on them.

I suspect that there may be a few differences between XP and Win 7,yet here you go.

You can access this from the "Run" box out of the Start Button. All you do is type "msconfig" in the box and hit enter.

All of the previous methods are good.

Make sure there are no shortcuts placed in your startup folder.

Do note that MS makes refference that MSconfig.exe is a diagnostic tool and is not meant to be a permanent manager for startup programs.I can only rekon this to be so because occasionally,when I run a program that I have previously disabled in msconfig,(DiverMax,CCC,updating Java RTE or even updating a driver has caused the program to be placed back under the Startup tab.So if you choose to use this,you may want to check once in a while to keep a firm grip on things.:lol:
