There seem to be some problems when quoting from earlier posts. What I've seen so far is that images are not quoted correctly (see this post), and hyperlinks are quoted as HTML tags (see this post).

I don't know where your link was supposed to point to, but it doesn't point to anything valid.

P.S. but the invalid link got quoted OK. Possibly it's quotes from the "old" forum that show incorrect links?

So, for me, to big problems identified so far:

1 - Insert link inserts the usual data, but it leads to a dead link, except for links within the forum, which seem to work OK.

2 - When I tap Reply it sometimes quotes the text ... Aah!, I see! that's because I hit Reply at the foot of the post, instead of Add Reply at the foot of the thread. Don't remember that problem occuring before.

I suppose I'll eventually get used to it.

That worked fine. I wonder if with the new forum, people are making the link wrongly. When posting a link a little box comes up with http highlghted. Right click on the highlighted part, not on the clear part.

Your post (and quote) looks like HTML, without turning HTML on. If I turn it on, it should look "normal".

Sorry, PW, can you explain what you mean by the words I've put in red. HTML is Off in the Options menu (presumably by default). Are you recommending that it should be On using one of the 2 unexplained On options?

Anyway, I'm going to try something else. To see if the problem is due to IE8 and its settings I'm going to post a link using Firefox, which I'll do straight after this.

Well, it works using Firefox, so IE8 seems to be the problem, at least so far as my computer and its settings is concerned. Just to complete the test, here's the link using the standard copy and paste technique: http://support.microsoft.com/.

I was not suggesting that you do anything wrong; I was just trying to explain what we are seeing (all the HTML tags in your quote and post).

But I have no idea how you got all that HTML into there...?

I have noticed that quotes from post from the old forum sometimes turns into HTML, but only inside the quote. In your post the HTML tags continue even in your own text...

Here is a link using the normal method I don't know why some are having a problem, I have already pointed out that when you click to post a link, there is a blue highlighted http, do NOT right click to the side of this, right click actually on it, and then insert the link. Type what you want in the box underneath.

I have the forum in the trusted sites list for a long time, but check I deleted it then added it again. It seemed to work, at least for some of the external links that weren't working for me earlier. Then I noticed something curious: for those links that weren't working I noticed in the explorer bar at the bottom of the screen the prefix http:// was occuring twice. For those that do work, it only occurs once.

So I've copied the address for BBC News... clicked on Insert link... clicked on paste... looked to see what appears in the little box...

BBC NEWS -that one doesn't work.

Aah... http:// is there TWICE! (from the explorer bar as IE tries to make the link). And that's because when I pasted in the address the cursor was hovering over the white space on the right, instead of the blue highlighted bit on the left (as andsome pointed out a few posts back). See screenshot below:

Perhaps, like me, Decandy is using the right click and paste rather than the keyboard shortcut.

Thar's correct, I use right click and paste rather than a keyboard shortcut. I've changed several of my keyboard shortcuts for use with another language so I generally avoid using them. If using the new forum layout is going to create so many problems I think members might soon be voting with their feet (or fingers). I realise that it brings advantages to those involved in running the forum, but that has to be balanced against user-friendliness for members and visitors.
