According to this undated review from PCWorld ClamWin does not give real time protection when you are connected to the internet or using a CD etc, but can only be used to scan a computer which may already be infected. So it's very limited.

I prefer to stick with Nod 32. Worth every penny.

As Dencandy says no realtime cover and no scan of e-mail, thought I think you can get a plugin to get it to check outlook, but not Outlook Express or any other POP e-mail client. It's an opensource project manned by volunteers, so unlike all other AV products isn't updated by a team of dedicated professionals. I'd be extremely wary about using it as first line defence on a home PC, putting it on a business PC would be cheese paring and very high risk. I'd suggest NOD for business use, but if you're wedded to the freeware route, check out Comodo. I'd hesitate to call it top line, but all the parts are there and it's maintained by a team of full time pros.
