annie_m Posted June 3, 2010 Report Share Posted June 3, 2010 Way back in the day when there was CP/M, the de-facto format was of 128 byte sectors. My dear old Herman's BIOS blocked the logical 128 byte sectors into 4k physical sectors on the disk. Any bigger than that & the drive would start to lose sync.Also the format routine interleaved the physical sectors (ie they were not in numeric order on the disk) this minimised wasted time while the next required sector spun under the head during reading or writing data.Ok, so hard drives are (I think) hard formatted, but I don't see a huge problem with a BIOS patch to cache the logical 512 byte sectors into the new 4k physical sectors expected by the HDD - although I can see how this might affect performance to some degree (& no, I haven't done the sums on how much degradation would occur). O'Course I could be totally misreading the issue & bear in mind I haven't done any System programming for YEARS!! So pelase be gentle..
