What clanger have I dropped.

Before I strip it down in the morning to go through all the checks, this is what has happened and I am looking for ideas.

I built a computer for my nephew, specs as follows;

Silverstone SuGo2 case,

AsRock 945GCM-S mobo,

Cosair 2 X 1GB pc6400 memory

Core to Duo 6670 CPU,

Asus 4870 graphics card,

Hitachi 500Gb hard drive, Sony DVDRW,

Novatech 550W PSU.

As it is a small case I replaced all the fans 3 X Xigmatec 80mm, and a Zalman CNPS 8700 LED HSF.

I have only just got the Zalman fan and had to take the motherboard out to fit a bracket to retain the HSF, then when I rebuilt it and plugged it in nothing happened.

I have an Antec PSU tester and checked the PSU and that was OK.

Before I replaced the HSF it was running with no problems, and Windows 7 pro was installed and up to date.

It sounds like a duff motherboard but has any one else any ideas.

Just wonder if you have shorted something out when fitting the new HSF bracket ?

Check that all connectors are correctly positioned, especially those fiddly single connectors for the M/B to case switches/USB sockets and such like. A machine I saw a few weeks ago somehow had the power connector to the M/B displaced one row awry.

Just took it all apart, and the Mobo is dead.

I cannot see any obvious marks that could point to a short.

As the mobo is only 8 weeks old and I brought it from a local computer dealer, it is going back.

I took the mobo back today, after they had tested it and checked the processor and RAM in another board they said it was dead.

They said they had not got another board the same, but could get another for me on Tuesday, or I could have a different board but it was more expensive, but as I had been inconvenienced if I wanted the other board there would be no extra charge.

This is the first time in 8 years that I have had to take anything back to them, but I could not have been treated better.

So back home with the better board, now for the fun, as it was a major hardware change what would Windows 7 Pro make of it.

After rebuilding it all and booting up I was presented with a page that said windows can not boot, do you want to run the repair option, so I clicked OK and of it went, 10 minutes later it said it could not repair, do I want to boot into Windows, so I clicked OK and was presented with the desktop.

To my surprise it started loading drivers for the new motherboard and 5 minutes later it asked for a restart and was all ok.

I checked Device Manager and all the drivers were present, this with no internet connection or OS disk asked for.

Then it asked me to reactivate the OS but would not let me do it online, I had to phone the free phone number.

Five minutes later and it is activated.

This was much easier that having to do an an XP reinstall after a major hardware change.

Trying to switch my nephew away from Windows would be impossible.

If you have the time catgate, give the PCLOS 2010 a try, I have used it for about a week and quite like it, or run it from the CD.
