catgate
Well what a funny few weeks I have just had.On the personal well being front I have spent about a fortnight in bed due to “leg leak” affecting both legs. (Varicose ulcers, around the ankle area, breaking open due to climbing a set of folding steps to clear out the gutters round the workshop). Over the last few days I have been getting up about mid day and, happily, things now seem to be back to “abnormal” again. However, in among all this has been a peculiar computer problem, which started quite a while before the onset of “leg leak”, and was concluded in the last couple of days.I had been experiencing an operational slowing down, which showed up mainly when logging on to Google and often in the slowness of “fetching” pages. At other times applications would just shut down without any provocation. I had suspected that this might have been due to changing over from Ubuntu 8.04 to Ubuntu 10.04 without doing any machine upgrade. So I took out the RAM (500Kb) and put in a new 1Gb stick. Nothing worked thereafter until I replaced the 500Kb, after which it was just as it was prior to the change. So after a lot of farting about with emails to Ebuyer I sent them back the new 1Gb stick, they checked it and finally sent me another new stick, which just went in and worked.......but did nothing at all for the speed problem. One day, just prior to all this, the screen resolution had changed, quite voluntarily, and there was no way it would go back to where it had been....the settings were just not available. The highest resolution I could get was 800x600 and this was far from satisfactory. So I popped in a Matrox card that I had lying about and instantly that made no difference at all.I then came to the conclusion that there must be a fault on the mother board involving the onboard graphics, so I ordered a new “Motherboard Bundle” , from CCL, with a 2.7GHz dual processor and 2Gb RAM and did a rebuild. All went well until I got to plugging in the main power feed from the PSU to the motherboard. I then discovered that “whilst I had not been looking” someone had decided to universally change from 20 pin plug and socket to 24 pin plug and socket, and there was no mention of it on the motherboard description on CCL website, from which I placed my order. Oh dear. However by three o'clock on Wednesday afternoon of this week I managed to establish meaningful verbal communication with “one of our operators” who was no longer busy and he arranged for an adaptor to be sent. It seems as though all is now well, but I have not noticed any great improvement over what I was getting prior to all this silliness starting, but I feel there must be some …..somewhere......(even if it only in my legs). I wonder if I can overclock my legs?
andsome
Glad you are getting yourself sorted again. Hope you can fix the computer. I have never dabbled in these weird operating systems myself. I get along great with Windows 7, and IE 8. B)

AlanHo
I am pleased to see that your ankles are on the mend. From what you say - it was a self inflicted injury. You really need to master the art of delegation - I am sure your wife would derive a great deal of job satisfaction from doing a bit of gutter cleaning whilst you play with your components.......... (Beats hasty retreat to put tin hat on before the ladies here see this post).
MANEMAN
Wow ! that's not good stuff. Sorry to hear that.I hope that you have had proper medical assistance with those ulcers ?Especially if you are diabetic. Even then with the way the NHS is at the moment you often have to update them on the updates that they should be updating you with. One such is **Maggot Therapy** doesn't sound too good, but according to a young nurse in our choir it works very well in cases such as yours where the usual healing process is lengthy or non-existent.These are special medical maggots. Dont go just shoving a load of any old maggots into an open wound or you could find yourself fartin' Blowflies in a couple of weeks. Also Tea Tree Oil is very good as a mild antiseptic. My Grandfather had the same as you and he was given the above treatments, went on to lead a full and active life until the age of 97.He died peacefully in his sleep. - Unfortunately all of the people on the coach that he was driving at the time died screaming. If those legs of yours become painful, rub "Deep Heat" or sports rubbing alcohol on your scrotum. You'll soon forget about inconsequential things such as painful legs.Hope that this bit of sense mixed with nonsense has cheered you up a bit and that things soon start to sort themselves out in your life.John. You'll soon forget about inconsequential things such as painful legs.I started with varicose veins when I was in my teens and that was one of the reasons why I was not hauled into National Service like all young men in those days. It was the onset of varicose veins that stoppd me from playing rugby. I remember getting a serious knock on the knee in one of the inter school games one Saturday, and after getting home I went and had a bath prior to attending to my knee. I had some Sloanes Linament for dealing with bruises etc and so after my bath I sat, unclothed, on the edge of my bed with my left hand cupped and with the open bottle in my right hand. I must have been sat unusually upright because, as I poured, some of the wretched stuff trickled through my cupped fingers and ended up on my genitalia. I can vouch for the effectiveness of your method of mind control.
catgate
Why is your life SO complicated?! Is it just you, do you think? I presume I must have been a right old sod in a previous existance.I am hoping that next time round I might be a turnip or a piece of string.
