No Outlook Express with Win 7 - what's the alternative?

Hello folks, I have a friend who I have persuaded to move from XP to Win 7.

Trouble is they had a copy of Outlook Express (not Outlook) on the old machine - and that of course contains all her history of emails. Many are important family history research emails.

As you know there is no Outlook Express in Win 7.

My friend is not one to use MS Office, preferring MS Works for the very little word processing letter writing she does - so installing MS Office 2007, just for Outlook, seems overkill.

I cannot see the way forward here.

Firstly how do we get the important emails out of Outlook Express that are on the old machine.

I know there is the copy paste option but we are looking at a collection covering many years.

And what email program is recommended instead of the familiar Outlook Express.

Your ideas are always practical, so what say you...

A nice free tool for backing up and transferring e-mail messages and settings is Retinax EZ eMail Backup.

As to alternatives I have a slight preference for Thunderbird but there are a few others worth a look Mulberry, Pegasus, & Sylpheed .

I suppose it means more will use it by default as they upgrade OS, which is a pity. Most people I know who've used it reckon it's a step backwards from Outlook Express and are really disappointed with it.
