An apple a day....?

Last Saturday we went into the main shopping mall in Solihull which is called Touchwood. Outside the Apple store we saw a long queue stretching for about 30 or 40 yards down the walkway. It was almost blocking access to the adjacent shops. At the head of the queue was a small desk manned by a couple of Apple employees bearing a placard which said "iPhone 4 - Queue here". The Apple guys were letting one customer into the shop as one came out.

What was significant - and believe me this is not intended as a racial comment in any way - was that as we walked past the queue it was evident that they were all young asian men - every single one of them. There were no females and no white faces. There must have been about a hundred in the queue. I assume they were queueing to buy a new Apple phone - but why only young asians? I always thought it was just us older people, who lived through WW2, that had retained a queueing addiction.

It also provoked the thought - why all this fuss about the iPhone? It is an awfully expensive item and is unlikely to make better calls than my old motorola phone which cost about twenty quid.

And here was I thinking there was a credit crunch and we are all having to watch our pennies.

As with Rolex watches. Is the time told to you via a Rolex any better than the time told to you by a, say, Timex?

The only point of a Rolex is to have the chances of being mugged raised ten fold.

I wonder how many in the queue were on the dole.

It may be that they think it will give them better reception when they call their relatives working in the call centres in the sub continent.

I remember when the Asian influx started in Bradford in the early 50s. they were working all sorts of hours and sending money to their families. I wonder if we are now seeing this in reverse.
