Alan2273
As different lasers are used to read/write to CD's and DVD's, it would seem that the CD laser has ceased to work.

bludgard
To access Device Manager: Right click Computer (or My Computer) icon>select Manage>select Device Manager. Under DVD/CD ROM drives click the + sign to expand the tree. Find the device (DVD/CD drive that is installed on your machine) and right click on it>select Uninstall>OK. Reboot to let Windows reinstall the driver.
-pops-
An external CD/DVD writer won't cost very much and can easily be connected to your laptop via USB.I tend always to use a stand alone optical disk writer as I've known several built-in laptop devices die without warning. The construction of laptop optical drives always seems flimsy and delicate to me and getting a bit ancient, clumsy and arthritic (as I am) a more robust device is much better for me.Standalone writers are very easy to use - just plug it in, let Windows find it and download its drivers and away you go.
