Mastercare extended warranty.

I have read in various newspapers here and there that 'The paper they are printed on are not worth a light'.

Has anyone had, or got, any experience with these type of extended warranties. I've never bothered with them in the past, but, now that I am on a pension I am starting to look into them.

Mastercare are offering me four years extended warranty for my forty-two inch tele for £131.00.

Any input of anyone's experiences who has taken out one of these would be appreciated.

I used it years ago when I purchased a desktop PC from PC World. The initial warrantee was fine, but I think things changed when it progressed onto the extended part.

In fact I have just received an offer of one for a laptop purchased last year - £139 for 4 years - which I will not be taking up. Mainly because I think that I can deal with 'most' things either mself, or with the assistance of people like yourself on this and other forum(s).

A television is probably a different matter though. Not such an easy decision.

Hello 'My Little Lotus Blossom'.

Yes that is the problem Irene. I have a City and Guilds in Electronics. I still make power supplies for different things simply for the reason you can still get hold of the parts and de-solder them and put new parts in and get them back to working condition again.

With Televisions, Hi-Fi and the likes these day's the parts are miniature and not so easy to work on. You can hardly see some of them let alone de-solder them and replace them. You need a magnifying glass for some of them.

88% of electronic breakdowns are dry solder joint related, always has been. Only about 4% are component breakdown related, the other 8% are either broken solder tracks or untraceable.

I'll have to have a good think about this. The warranty isn't up till 16th July so I still have a couple of week's left yet.

I got an extended warranty for the Wifes laptop. The optical drive went out and the manufacturer had no problems repairing it if I sent it to them and paid for the postage plus insurance to do so. There and back would have cost me more than 4 opticals (at the local level) and twice as much as the cost of the extended waranty itself. Needless to say, the drive is repaired at a minimal cost. :glare:

A lot of ext. war. force the consumer to send the product back to the manufacturer; no in store repairs or returns....

I doubt if I will purchase another dubious piece of toilet-paper.

To be fair; I am sure there is a niche for it.

Well the cover I have been offered is:

Unlimited free repairs.

Free replacement if it can't be fixed.

Protection against mechanical faults and breakdowns.

Protection against unintentional breakage.

Speedy repairs.

FREE technical helpline for instant advice.

Worldwide protection.

[ Worldwide protection] At 42 inches wide I'm hardly to be taking it with me on my travels.

As for the repair side. If it can't be fixed at home, The Insurance Company arrange a courier to collect it from the premises and deliver to an authorised repairer, then collect and deliver it back to the customer at their expense, as part of the Insurance agreement.

Well that does it. I am not bothering to take out any extended warranty.

I did a Google search and after reading what I came across it made my mind up. I would sooner fork out the cash for a new telly than have the nightmares a lot of people have had.

  • 2 months later...

I have never had any trouble with them. They replaced an old washing machine for a contribution of £59 when it became unrepairable. You can only speak as you find. It had broken down with a faulty electronic programmer several time during the time we had it. Repaired without bother each time.

If you do a Google search for Mastercare and read some of the problems people are having you would be amazed handsome. Court Cases, Engineers not showing up for weeks on end, people being given the wrong information from their call centre's, the list goes on and on. For me it's not worth the hassle.
