dustytyke
For some mysterious reason, my PC (running Windows 7) has started scheduling a disk check every time a start up. This is obviously annoying as it takes time and is unnecessary. I have to watch out each time for the 'press any key' message to put a stop to it. On the advice of our friendly computer nerd, I've gone through the procedure:Right mouse click on C drive.Select Properties.Select Tools.Click on check now for error checking.Tick both boxes offered.Click OK.Reboot.The PC, of course, then goes through whole shebang of full disk checking (takes a couple of hours; meanwhile the PC is out of use). This seems to work for a couple of start ups but then occurs again.Driving me crackers ! What do I do to stop this happening ?
Alan2273
the proper way to disable CHKDSK from starting up is using the /x switch on chkntfs command in command prompt. The /x switch will exclude a drive from the default boot-time check. If you have drive C: as your hard drive, then the command to disable chkdsk from scanning C: drive would be:chkntfs /x c:If you have 2 drive, C and D, you can disable chkdsk with the command belowchkntfs /x c: d:then go ahead and reboot. dustytyke
Thanks Alan2273. I went through the procedure you specified, then throughout yesterday I shut down and started up again a few times just to make sure all was OK. I went to bed happy. This morning it's back again ! Some malevolent spirit has visited my PC during the night and set the CHKDISK business off again ! Any other suggestions ?
bludgard
Any other suggestions ?What is the actual health of the hard-drive in the machine, dustytyke?Possibly running hard-drive specific software to determine this will eliminate or verify the possibility of corruption. If one will provide the make and model of drive, surely there will be a link provided for proper diagnostics.Cheers
dustytyke
Hello bludgard. I run Iolo's System Mechanic at frequent intervals and use it to correct any 'health' issues in the hard drive. Presently, it is showing the top rating 'Good'. The C: drive is a Samsung HD103UJATA device; when I access its 'Properties' and check it I am told that it is 'working properly'.
bludgard
Run the Seagate diag prog SeaTools for Windows and/or SeaTools for DOS.As the drive Samsung HD103UJ is a bit dayed and no longer produced, Seagate has taken over. One can find the diagnostic software here:http://www.seagate.com/support/internal-hard-drives/desktop-hard-drives/spinpoint-v-series/Hit the Downloads button:Direct download links:SeaTools for DOS SeaTools for Windows
dustytyke
I've downloaded the Seagate Sea Tools (which necessitated downloading .net4 Frame). OK, so what do I now do with it ? What does it tell me and how does it help with my problem ?
bludgard
I am guessing that SeaTools for Windows was the download of choice since .Net4 was installed?A link will be provided (.PDF) to help with drive diags since this can get lenghty:SeaTools for WindowsSeaTools for DOSI have to go for now but will be back in a couple hours to try to help with diags; shouldn't be too tough.... bludgard
This program will tell if the drive is actually "good" or "bad".It is a bad idea (IMO) to test the integrity of a drive with common software; they are not written for specific hardware but for the gleaning of the masses.Drive tools are produced and offered free from the manufacturer(s); not for profit. If the drive is failing SeaTools will give a code for a replacement (if still under warranty).Read-up on it and come back if there are any "By George, I think I've got it(s)!" or "I have no clue what is goin' on(s)!". bludgard
What happens when the printer is diconnected at boot? For some mysterious reason, my PC (running Windows 7) has started scheduling a disk check every time a start up.How long has this been going on? Is there not a restore point to revert the system back to before the "disk error"? Windows 7 has native ability to create images (just in case something should run amuck, there is a reliable path back) of drives/partitions in the machine.... Just sayin'.Click Start > type Event > strike the Enter key I am using Windows 7 x64 (64-bit) ATM and find chkdsk logs in:Event Viewer > Windows Logs > ApplicationSort by Source and look for Chkdsk as the source. The Event Viewer will list each scan. Click on the latest scan to view both system-event information and scan results in the preview pane; if you don't see a preview pane, you can turn it on in the View menu or simply double-click the log entry to open it in a separate window. You can save it as a text file by clicking the Action button in the menu-bar and select Save Selected Events. Then, give the text file a name and use the Save as type menu to choose Text (Tab deliminated)(*.txt).Then click Save.Enter that text into the next post. dustytyke
This problem has been going on for about 3 weeks. Sometimes it doesn't happen but most times it does, on start up. Thinking back, it probably started when I began to get "UI File missing" messages in relation to the Kodak Hero 7.1 printer. Last week I contacted Kodak Support and they remotely installed an up to date version of the printer software. However, this has had no effect on the CHKDSK problem.I'll try booting with the printer diconnected and see what happens.
