How To Embarrass Your Doctor

I had to attend the doctor's today for my annual diabetic review.

I hasten to add that although diagnosed as a diabetic 7 years ago - it is only by a short head. My glucose tolerance test resulted in a score of 11.1 units - the threshold to be classified as diabetic is 11.0. I don't need medication and just watch my diet.

Today the doctor was an attractive young lady doctor new to our medical centre - young by my standards but ancient when regarded by a teenager. I guess she was in her late 30's.

She took my blood pressure (elevated - pant)

She weighed me remarking that I had increased my weight by 3 Kg since last year

She measured my height and said I had lost 0.5 cms since last year

She measure my waist and remarked it was unchanged

She examined my feet - and checked their sensitivity with a tuning fork and needle. No change from last year.

She reviewed my blood tests taken 2 weeks ago and commented that my 3 month blood sugar average was 6.1 which was good and my cholesterol was 5.8 which was fine - it indicated that I was still eating a good diet.

She then proceeded to ask the usual list of tick box questions about my life style, aches and pains etc which culminated in a question I had been waiting for.

She fidgeted a little when she said "I expect you are aware that diabetes can cause erectile dysfunction - do you have a problem in this respect"

My answer "Yes and no"

"Sorry - what do you mean by that" - she looked flustered

"Because it makes it difficult to roll out of bed every morning"

Hardly a glimmer of a reaction - just a tight lipped response "I will tick 'no' then"

I suspect I will not be on her list next year.

(This is not one of my jokes - its is quite true)
