Windows old folders in Windows 7

Recommended Posts

When reinstalling Windows 7, you must have noticed a folder named Windows old. Having reinstalled on more than one occasion, I had three such folders, Windows old, Windows old 001, and Windows old 002. All taking up valuable hard drive space. I tried deleting one some time ago, but had all sorts of dire warnings come up, so didn’t bother to carry on. Having just made a fresh ACRONIS back up I decided to give it another go. Each folder takes several long minutes to delete, and needs watching because you have to click to give permissions every so often. I did the first two several days ago, and did the final one yesterday. I can report that there are NO problems resulting whatsoever, and the computer seems to be running faster without the encumbrance of these folders. There is also a large increase of free space on the hard drive. Go ahead and give it a go.

Yep, you can safely delete "Windows Old" folders. Just make sure there is nothing you require before doing so.

A heck of a lot of space can be retrieved on both Windows XP and 7 by turning off hibernation if you never use it. - Dont do this on Windows 8 though !

I will be avoiding W8 as long as possible, certainly while this computer holds up

Me too working on the long term knowledge of those who know computer programs better than I - not hard mind you

And that info seems to be right on track. That M$ operating systems are one good one avoid one good one avoid.

I am getting used to 7 but it does have a few dragging bits that were faster on XP like going around the houses to bring up Task Master which I use when stuck and needing to shut down a non responding program.

Yes that worked fine on XP home but on Windows 7 cant get it straight off - it goes to a blue screen with several options one of which is Task Master.

Can shut down from that one too - so a bit of a slow down in comparison which is what I meant - wonder why too.
