Lamb Chop
Advice from M$ is that need the above in order to go to windows 7. Ran Belarc Advisor and all programs that show what is on board the computer today and cant see Direct 9 X but going over to M$ say that is has been around since 2010 so does that mean I have it and do you know where to check for it? The upgrade version I got is legal as it has a license for 3 in house computers - well hope so when I activate as off of EBay. :D Idea being to get a used lap top later and upgrade that too. Seems to be lot available on EBay.

-pops-
I don't want to put you off, LC but I've heard lots of horror stories about Windows obtained from places such as eBay. Like PW, I don't understand why it should matter whether you have Direct X installed on the old O/S. If you are installing an upgrade version of Windows, all that matters is that you have a genuine older version installed or, at least available for checking, during the installation of the new one. Ensure you have a full backup of your old Windows before going ahead with the upgrade.
andsome
It is ESSENTIAL that you run this tool FIRST. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/downloads/upgrade-advisor
Lamb Chop
Ok guys thanks for that - I will be able to obtain money back if not legal - supposed to be ha ha. Friedn already got caught but this is looking like it should and has microsoft sticker saying Aussie version but then who knows. Anyway - re backing up someone said run command > format e:/ (external device then) copy C:/ and it will copy the whole hard drive. Is that kosher. I am a bit worried as been here before and lost as back up no good. And couldn't get Acronis to work. Also see from Belarc that I have 2 anti virus running and only show 1. MS Essentials but says still running Avast and it is up to date too. Yet Revo C Cleaner and Remove dont show it being here but could explain a lot of my problems -yes? andsome
With all the problems that you seem to have with your computer, I would be very reluctant to run an update install even after using the update advisor tool. I would only do a full install from scratch, after a format.
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
Anyway - re backing up someone said run command > format e:/ (external device then) copy C:/ and it will copy the whole hard drive. No, neither your FORMAT nor your COPY command are valid. Better use a regular backup program, either Acronis, or Windows' own backup program. Lamb Chop
OK thanks for that guys wasn't sure it was good advice anyway. Yes and I do want a clean change over - never had any problems with my first XP but this version has been doomed to be buggy. I will go and see Windows update. I have this Dell restore on here - used it before to re-install - I think it is actually Ghost.. Should bring the HD which I have tested and is 'healthy' back to ready for a now OS and it will be new to me as havent seen it at all - hope it is not too different to XP :D I wont know will I until do it and activate it that is it legal - thats the worry - my friend ended up buying W8 when hers turned out to be a dud - Chinese knock off which is the problem - but because I paid with Pay Pal you can get back the money although say no returns because they guaranteed it to be genuine etc - or so they say. Hope not to have to test it. Just as a point of interest how does MS know it is in the same family as have licence for 3 computers and 2 discs etc 32bit & 64 Bit. I thought each computer had its own ID.

I thought each computer had its own ID. They don't know that; MS allows three activations - regardless where the computers are. You could install one on my computer, for all I know. Lamb Chop
That's what I thought might be the case Pat as they don't know which computer as unlike some mobiles no GPS inside to say its location. So these 3 packs could well be shared by 3 people in different locations. But wont risk it ha ha. Well as ansome said, I ran The Windows 7 advisor - it ran for 55 minutes and still nothing happened so cancelled it. I also went to Windows back ups and their back up was too complicated for me - not got a lot of confidence in myself because every time I have backed up lately been a mess. On their backup page at the bottom they recommend using a paid for back up program Back Up Three hundred by Argentum for $29US and trial version working so did a backup of emails and it compressed them and sent it to Drive E which is my Toshiba external hard drive.Seems must to alright if M$ say so. http://www.argentuma.com/backup.html Bit worried re Advisor not completing so after cleaning up will run it again. And see. Not sure that I am doing an upgrade as such - because that means I thought upgrading from say XP home to another version higher and am using Ghost which formats the HD then using a disc with a 32 bit version of Windows 7 to put that OS on my computer. Gets a bit confusing that upgrade bit as they advertised Window & Upgrade and Windows & Family pack and I bought the family pack but as far as I can see both the same a full OS on discs - 1 x 32 bit and 1 x 64 bit each on it sown disc and 3 licenses on the family pack but both were asking same price. Asked the sellers - all computer tech shops on mainland Australia by pm if good for my computer and gave them the stats on it and all said yes. But only for 32 bit. I guess time will tell and it wont be now until tomorrow to do the actual deed.
Lamb Chop
OK well did it and now using windows 7 - wow lots to learn as not a bit like XP. And a bit slow so far - compared with XP opening but could be because it is constantly for last 3 days updating asnd today opened up configuring service pack 3. But didnt get good service in back ups. only ones survived are the cut and past and of course cant seem to get them right in windows 7 so will leave them on my E drive and look up what data I need there. But lost all of my bookmarks and emails off of Firefox and Thunderbird do have the old program files in my E drive but can think how to get them over as they will I think have this data. Or will they? Did a back up on these with Mozbase but corrupted so was the Agentine Files - seems I have no luck with back ups at all. And first off 138 updates most failed and thought oh no but since then have taken and all were successful. I have installed most off of my installed programs files and then updated but did go and ge fresh ones where Pro etc and I think SAS snuck down a Chrome as something did and not Ccleaner as have not yet opened it to install and they do say and I always unclick as cant stand Chrome too clunky and slow compared with Firefox and even IE8 which I use next if needed. Revo uninstaller took 4 minutes plus to uninstall Chrome bit long and also putting system restore point takes longer than with XP. But it was a legal copy so 1 up for E Bay. But did buy it off a computer shop not a private person.
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
... today opened up configuring service pack 3. Not sure what you are doing; Windows 7 so far only has a service pack 1.
Lamb Chop
... today opened up configuring service pack 3. Not sure what you are doing; Windows 7 so far only has a service pack 1. Neither I am Pat. so far have been changing over since did the thing 4 o'clock friday and since then I have had continuous downloads of patches from M$ - first lot 138 didnt take but then did them over again Sat and then on boot got message congfiguring etc and it has been like that every day since and today also - soon to get the lot I guess. When I re-installed XP it did the lot in 1 go - huge amount because it was 2006 version so from there and service pack 3 etc. But one service pack to date for 7. Now I am having problems with favourites. when I click onto it and the window comes down - it wont let me have a menu drop down of files for the website I want to save etc. Went onto organise and it is clunky but getting there seems like you save and then have to go and organize and to get thing into a file drag. Now is that the system? Also on the task bar it is very cluttered. And I cant find services as audo icon says service not running. Getting there but slow as takes a while I had a lot of programs and setting it all up again takes a while like I tunes had to download all over again what I had and luckily they have updated and swifter than it was. How to get some of the clutter off the task bar is something I need to find out how to too Taking a while as working between times but then we have to keep the ackers rolling in or else eh
Boris
After you installed Windows 7 did you also install all the drivers that your motherboard/devices need ?
Lamb Chop
After you installed Windows 7 did you also install all the drivers that your motherboard/devices need ? No I didnt Boris thanks for reminding me - as had updated for XP but didnt realize needed Vista ones that I got when using my Genius Update program. Most of the drivers were out of date and now updated and working. I have now got these and it is a lot faster - thought it was slow and even had to update my M$ mouse and keyboard and they were faster after too. Lots to do still. But getting there - W7 does have some great features - I will be glad when I can find things as renamed lots and things actually look different on here than on XP weird eh Also cant find how to get things off left hand side of task bar like IE incom and worse Magnifyer which opens if the mouse gets a bit too close and drives me insane. Not hard to do actually right now What I have noticed is since I last downloaded programs how many are including stuff you dont want and some like Foxit off of CNet had a CNet installer and it was going to install other programs without any opt out so I cancelled so be careful. Usually use File Hippo and they dont do things like that so went there and got it and only had to opt out of toolbar etc. There is another reader I had but didnt kep it in installed programs so cant find it now - someone here recommended it and works faster then Foxit these days. Checked on ?File Hippon but did not see it or a name that I recognised.
