A lot of people are unaware that if you open Google, and type "Free smoke alarms in" followed by your county or area, you will be offered a free phone number. They will offer you a free fire inspection and free smoke alarms with a ten year battery life. Why pay? The attending fireman or official will remove the ones that you have and replace them with the free ones. One of ours failed at 1 AM a couple of days ago. I phoned the number hoping to leave a message on an answerphone, only to find that a young lady was on duty. She sent someone out to replace the faulty one. What more can you ask? Economics really - far cheaper for them to fork out a few quid for alarms (remember wholesale prices to them) than paying who knows what to either put a fire out or treat CO poisoning.
