Cautionary tail regarding Amazon

I like Amazon, they're generally cheap fast, reliable and the customer service is good,            BUT there is one thing that I find about their system that gives me no confidence at all and that's the amount of information needed to become an Amazon Seller and how much of that Amazon shows on the website.

This was brought on by my finding an item at a spectacularly good price, so good I thought I would look at the supplier info to check up on feedback from clients, there was none, nor was there an address and the "Detailed Supplier info" section just gives a generic :-

No direct contact method at all, except via Amazon and no indication as to where on earth these people may be, digging around I found quite a few of these anonymous sellers, some of which look to have been abandoned by whoever created them. Concerned I looked into what was required to become a seller a couple of months ago it was Contact Name, Phone Number and Bank Account anything else was optional. This bugged me as it looked as if Amazon probably didn't know where they were either. So I raised it with Amazon who said they'd look into it. Now fair do to them it looks as if they actually did as you now need rather more info before signing up :

  1. Credit Card
  2. Phone Number
  3. Company Registration Details
  4. Primary Contact Person Information
  5. Beneficial Owner Information
  6. Bank Account Information

But they still have totally anonymous sellers from god knows where on the system. So now when I find stuff that's not supplied by Amazon I always drill through to the supplier details to see what's shown. I have no problem buying stuff from companies in China or Japan and have done on several occasions. I decline however to have my personal details shipped of to some made up name at an anonymous point in the cloud.

It's the old Caveat Emptor just a new version for the digital age.

Look at seller reviews. Some are better than others. I have been well pleased with some, and not so pleased with others. I had an experience several years ago with one. When I checked the serial number of an electric mattress cover with the importer due to a repeated fault,I found that it had left the factory four years earlier. Checking the address of the seller on Google maps,I found out that it was a small council house in the back streets of Cardiff. I threatened her with the small claims court, and eventually obtained a full refund. I also advised Cardiff council that a business was being run from the property.

My point exactly, there are many that are quite open about where they are and have been going long enough to gather sufficient client feedback to show how effective they are. But as I said there are some that are completely anonymous that have 0 reviews, factors that would usually mean you wouldn't touch them with the proverbial barge pole, yet could end up dealing with if you simply assume it must be OK it's Amazon. I'm fully aware that as Amazon handle the payments they don't get your financial details it's just that in these days of Identity theft I get twitchy about the possibility my name and address are being given to some anonymous cloud address.
