Guest nellie2
Hi there antidote and welcome to the forum... I hope that once you get your problems sorted that you will stay around and join in!! :) First of all... before you take the radical step of getting rid of XP, is there anything we can help you with?? Secondly, you can't format your drive using the W98 cd, you will have to boot using your boot disk and then type fdisk on the A:/ prompt to take you to the fdisk utility. An 80 gig hard drive will need partitioning too I think. Here are a couple of articles that take you through the fdisk proceedure and the hard drive format proceedure.http://pcsupport.about.com/library/weekly/aa082602b.htmcan I suggest that you make sure you have the drivers that you will need for your hardware to hand before you format.Modem drivers and ethernet drivers especially depending on how you connect to the internet.good luck it is a bit quiet here at the moment cos everyone is watching the rugby.... but I just can't bear the tension so am just keeping my fingers crossed from afar at the moment!! :D
artist
I can't imagine anyone going back to (the troublesome) W98! What's your problem antidote?
mark2
i'm sure we can get XP running right for you, did the comp have XP on when you got it ?If you can answer some questions about hardware etc, we'll get it right for you. :) ;)
-pops-
I agree with what's gone before. Installing W98 in preference to XP is a definite retrograde step.I been computing a good number of years and I can categorically state that XP is much better than any of its predecessors. If you're having trouble with XP, let us try and help with that rather than installing something you may regret later.Welcome anyway. Let's see if we can sort things out for you.

Guest nellie2
If you aren't sure of your specs you can download and run either of these free programshttp://www.belarc.com/free_download.htmlhttp://www.webattack.com/get/aida32.shtmlthey are both very good, aida32 gives you a lot more info though!! Guest Grim Reaper
knowing that the modem is a usb device, it sounds like you may need to update your chipset and usb drivers (or at least you have the most recent ones.)Also, ensure that you have the most recent drivers for your modem. (these are on the BT supplied disc)I have the same modem and have had no troubles with it at all.having said all that, i have had the same problem re just getting stuck on the saving settings screen and it DOES seem to be something to do with the dial up connection. It would seem that occasionally, something stops the disconnection and systray.exe gets stuck and the system cannot shut down. The only fix that i have found is a reformat....BVW, the way that the bt adsl works is basically just like a dial up modem, ie you have to establish a connection when one logs on, it only takes a second, bit it still dials the number.
