Norton AntiVirus

Updating Norton Antivirus (NAV) cannot be made more easier, as by default Automatic Live Updating is up and running from the moment you run NAV [if you select the option to use LiveUpdate during Installation].

Automatic LiveUpdate checks for an Internet connection every five minutes until a connection is found, and then every four hours. Usually every Wednesday an update (via LiveUpdate) will be released and will be downloaded and installed automatically. If however there is an immediate/serious threat, LiveUpdate can update on any day.

Virus Definitions

Protection updates are files that are available from Symantec that keep your Symantec products up-to-date with the latest anti-threat technology.

Program Updates

Program updates are minor improvements to your installed product. These differ from product upgrades, which are newer versions of entire products. Program updates that have self-installers to replace existing software code are called patches. Patches are usually created to extend operating system or hardware compatibility, adjust a performance issue, or fix bugs.

LiveUpdate automates the process of obtaining and installing program updates. It locates and obtains files from an Internet site, installs them, and then deletes the leftover files from your computer

LiveUpdate is the easiest way to update NAV so you are safe from the latest viral threats. However you must have an active Internet connection for it to function properly. It's also a good idea to check that the virus definations have been updated and you can do this by opening NAV and at the bottom have a look at the date next to Virus Definitions. (see pic below)

Manual Update

You can however turn of LiveUpdate and update NAV manually. To update NAV manually it is a good idea to turn LiveUpdate off. To do this open NAV and click Options, LiveUpdate and remove the tick next to Enable Automatic LiveUpdate (recommended) (see pic below)

You now need to download the latest Virus Definitions file from the symantec site via Intelligent Updater. Intelligent Updater is a file that can be updateted everyday with the lastest virus definitons.

Which Update Method shall i choose?

LiveUpdate - Easiest as you do not have to do anything as long as there is an active internet connection NAV will be updated as and when there is an update available. However if there is a problem then you will not be protected from the latest threats. So you could in the end have to go look for an update yourself, which defeats the intention of LiveUpdate.

Intelligent Updater - You must get into the routine of checking for updates and installing the update yourself. However by doing this you will be protected against recent threats (probably) on the day a threat is found.

For convenience use LiveUpdate as it is works perfectly everytime (for me anyway).

If you want to control the updating of NAV yourself then go for the Intelligent Updater.
