Microsoft will stop supporting their JVM version on September 30th, 2004. And, because of Microsoft's recent court settlement with Sun, there will be no replacement. Microsoft recommends that, after 9/30, you lock down Microsoft Internet Explorer security zones so that the MSJVM works only with trusted sites.Microsoft talks about transitioning from Virtual machine here.A better idea though is to go over to here and get Sun's official Java software. The process couldn't besimpler: Just click on the "Get It Now" button and Sun automatically downloads and installs the official Java software your computer. And Sun's free Java software is available for the PC, Mac, Linux, and (obviously) Sun Solaris.You'll [probably] be asked to reboot once the new Java software is installed. Once you reboot, though, you'll have the latest, greatest version of Java. And, if you are a PC user, you won't have to worry about what's going to happen when Microsoft's JVM officially dies in September.And once you've updated your Java, you can find a BUNCH of free Java applets to play with here! :) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

andsome Posted January 8, 2004 Report Share Posted January 8, 2004 Many thanks Nellie, all downloaded and installed, with one minor problem which may be worth noting. The initial download was exceptionally quick, but the installation took an age. Eventually I had a window open up which informed me of a failed installation. I did a system restore, then downloaded again, having first DISABLED my AV and Firewall. The whole thing then took only a couple of minutes. Call me dopey but I just can't see how to turn off AdAware! I think that is the problem - although there are other bits and bobs, security-wise, like scriptrap and antispy. What should I do? What should I do?Not having this program I don't know of course, but does it run continuously? Spybot certainly doesn't. Have you tried again with the AV and firewall disabled? When applications which depend on that certificate try to make an SSL connection, they fail and try to access crl.verisign.com, the certificate revocation list server. This has effectively DOS'ed that site, and Verisign has now updated the DNS record for that address to include several non-routable addresses, reducing the load on their servers. Some applications affected include older Internet Explorer browsers, Java, and Norton Antivirus (which may manifest itself as Microsoft Word being very slow to start). Is there anything I can do to correct this please? I have IE 6 with all the updates, and have just paid for another year with Norton. Office including Word has the latest updates applied. -pops- Posted January 15, 2004 Report Share Posted January 15, 2004 I'm an Opera user and on every install I do of that program (mine or other people's machines) I download the "with Java" version. I've never noticed any difference in the computer speed before and after the download. I've had a couple of failed installs but they are quickly rectified. I found I had to take off M$ virtual machine because even though I had sun java installed VM was causing a bit of a conflict and I couldn't view some pages. Check to verify that ja142000.cab is available and accessible' It ain't. I think perhaps a better way of doing this is to download the latest Opera ( Java download) which comes with the latest Sun java. That's what I've always done in the past. Waddya think ? I d'ld the new Opera but it still reported an error on the Java install, something connected with the Windows installer.
