Uart Chip

Anyone know what the above chip does ?

Got called out to an ME comp not booting, then only booting into safe mode.

There was a sound similar to a cable brushing the fan, nothing touching there, tried to run microscope 8 diagnostic software, no keyboard input so couldn't run it.

An old substitute keyboard allowed me to run the software, running the keyboard test highlighted the chip failure.

keyboard is ps2 connection.

System is old ex-office viglen comp, all onboard except nic for net connection sharing not able to find any further mobo details

tried googling for the answer most problems with uart seem to be modem

related, but no modem fitted.

Anyone help here or should I condemn the keyboard ? Has since booted to safe mode once in 6 boots, should I be looking to condemn the mobo?

Should I offer to build him a new one ? He isn't known for blowing his cash, will just want a basic so/ho and internet system anyone any ideas of cost?

Ok have had another look at the faulty system, doesn't matter which keyboard I try, I now get problems booting with keyboard attached, working around the problem now but have had a look at the configurable systems at the above site approx £430. Any body had any problems with them or any other suggested sites to look at ?
