Andy-2004
As some of you may know i had a very big.... :shifty: "mishap" :shifty: that resulted in reformattingWhats your opinions on backing up....My thoughs would be that u had to buy another hdd and put info on it....Then mark2 said that he had 1 60 Gb HDD and it was recognised by the computer as 4 different HDD'sso i was just wondering what u all used and y? bvw
Powerless has written an excellent tutorial on backing-up:http://www.windowsforum.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=7054I don't have anything of major importance on my machine except my photo albums....everything else is replaceable.I have a 160gig hard drive partitioned into 3.I also have a 30gig external disk I save files to.I use my cd writer and copy to that.I have another machine networked to this one, that has an 80gig hard drive, partitioned into 3, and files are backed-up between the 2 machines.I also use Drive Image and create an image and save that to a partition. Anything catastrophic that may occur I can restore to a working system, I do an image every week and keep at least 2 images on a seperate partition.I also have a DVD writer, but I've not used that yet. nellie2
I have a 60gig hard drive, it did just have the one partition with my operating system on it. I also have a 5 gig hard drive which I keep copies of important stuff like favourites, documents, address books, downloads etc.Today though I decided to partition my 60 gig, which I managed to do after a bit of fiddling about with partition magic. So I now have about 45gig with my o/os on, 15 gig just created and my 5gig.I created the 15gig drive to put drive images of my main hdd and my backup hdd on. Just did the first image and it seemed to go ok!!! :)
-pops-
Remeber that a physically separate drive is preferable to one which is partitioned into "theoretical" drives. If the drive goes base over apex - which they do with alarming frequency - then ALL information on the drive may well be lost. With the price of hard drives being so low these days, my view is that you put another drive in there and use that for your backups. You can, of course, use it for other purposes as well. The tutorial by Powerless is a very good guide to backing up and explains in more detail what I have just stated. nellie2
Remeber that a physically separate drive is preferable to one which is partitioned into "theoretical" drives.I know -pops- and I intend to get another separate hdd as soon as I can. I do have a separate one but it is only tiny and isn't big enough for an image but I do have backups of all my docs and important files etc on there.... so a reformat wouldn't be disastrous. No Andy you don't have to have windows on a seperate partion, as long as you have your operating system on your primary partion and format any further partions as logical partions. nellie2
As long as you have your operating system on your C drive then you dont need to have it on any other drive

bvw
Yes, I have the 30gig one. I use an enclosure which you can take out the drive and replace with another if you want to. I use USB2, but it's not much different to USB1.1 to be honest.
