christmascracker Posted March 20, 2004 Report Share Posted March 20, 2004 When I was replacing my HDD yesterday, I noticed how hot it was. So checked the temp using the s.m.a.r.t bit in Aida32.When the two drives are running together the temp of the C drive goes up to 55c, when checking on the Samsung website this is suposed to be the max operating temp :unsure: When running on it's own it stays at around 43c.The slave runs at around 43c when both are connected.They are mounted in a caddy, horizontally, directly under the internal card reader,floppy & dvd drives.Is there any way I can seperate the two so there is at least some space between them.Also :rolleyes: I only seem to have the processor fan and the PSU fan, should I have more?I'm not worried about the CPU temp as that is ok.Any advice welcome :) Thanks Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest ellas Posted March 20, 2004 Report Share Posted March 20, 2004 you got no option in the drive bays to put a gap there,one thing I did on one of mines was to move the floppy into a spare cdrom slot,its cheap to buy a ftting kit,and move a h/drive into the space left by the floppy thus creating a gap between h/drives,have a look at the h/drive coolers here http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Onl...Coolers_57.html there only about £6. or get a drive cage extension that bolts onto your exsisting h/drive cage also inexpensive at the likes of maplin. It would depend upon the space available in your case, the length of your cables etc.Obviously, you should not mount a drive anywhere where it will impede on other components, but my initial thoughts (without knowing your actual case layout) are whether it is possible to get some brackets and hang the drive from underneath your current caddy.Another alternative, would be to fit some form of drive cooler, but looking at these, I suspect that the screw direct to drive versions would only work if you moved the second disc anyway. If your system and processor temperatures are OK, then you do not need one, but some people always like to have as much cooling as possible. It is a straight forward job to fit a fan to the rear of your case, you will almost certainly have a mesh hole with the screw holes already for one, so all you need to do is screw up 4 screws and plug in the power leads. However, I doubt this will help cool the Hard Drives, because the airflow will probably not run over them.Hope this info helps with your decisions. Mr. M. Pilch Posted March 20, 2004 Report Share Posted March 20, 2004 As has been said, it is possible to cool the drive's.On your case do you have a slot at the front for a 80/92/120mm fan? that will push plenty of air over the drive.The other option is a cool drive by coolermaster. This is a Aluminum casing with a 40mm fan in that has the hard drive in cased. These are very cold to touch, thus drawing the heat away. Agent Smith Posted March 20, 2004 Report Share Posted March 20, 2004 christmascracker, looking at your picture, I reckon it would be quite easy to fabricate an extension for your HDD caddy, and lower the second drive by an inch.All you would need is a couple of sheets of 1 or 2 mm metal, cut to roughly the same length of the caddy, and then drilled with four holes, 2 top, 2 bottom. Pilch Posted March 20, 2004 Report Share Posted March 20, 2004 Quick note..Looks like it is a Packard Bell Case.I would perhap's think about getting a dremmel/jig saw and i would modify the case some what (If it isnt in warrenty)Firstly Where you have the USB port and other thing's on the front, take those wires and move them to a lower point in the case then try and fit an 80mm fan in to drag in cold air in.Other than that my other suggestion would be perhap's a better case...
