nellie2
I appreciate what you are saying Andy.... but at this moment in time it is not our intention to delete any members because they haven't posted or to send out emails threatening deletion!! Not everyone is as verbal as we are.... some people find it very daunting to come to an established forum where everyone seems to know everyone else. It would be nice if they just posted a hello.... but it doesn't matter if they don't. As long as the information already here solves their problem and the good humour puts a smile on their face then that is good enough for me. There is no rule that says members have to post to remain members.

Damo
Whats the point of this post?Go to any other forum, such as PCA for example, they have over 120,000 members, most of them are inactive, should they delete all of them aswell? It serves no purpose. Find something else to post about! :P

Guest ellas
yeah well theres a lot of forums on the net,the easy bit is to get them to sign up,the hard bits getting them to comeback and post, nel says sending emails is spamming, and maybe it is,but how many times have you lost a link or forgotten a website, maybe a test case of say 30 members who have not posted in the last 2 months would be an idea, and then see how many post or complain about spam. djohn
Andy has made a good point and asked a perfectly reasonable question, just that he is persisting in approaching it from one pint of view only.I voted that it doesn't matter if a member post or not and fully understand the reason many just want to read the threads. But why are they not posting? No one seems to be addressing this point.Early last year I formatted my drive and forgot the URL to the forum, I was interested enough to search for it even though it took some time and effort. I continued to visit the forum and read the post but felt unable to join in the conversation or little jokes, I felt as though I was an outsider.I made no visits to the forum for a couple of months and the forum would probably still be something long lost and never thought of again. What changed my mind, what was it that encouraged me to not only visit but start posting as well? One day I received an e-mail from Craig saying he had noticed I was not visiting the forum and asked me why and if I was keeping well? I replied to him explaining the reasons, received an immediate and encouraging response. The following day I was back in the forum and continued to read but rarely posted, then all of a sudden other members seemed to see my post/replies and commented on them, just a word here and there but it was a start.I made a humorous comment one day and it was nel who replied saying, "Djohn you crack me up" with a big smiley after the comment. That was it, I finally felt accepted into the forum. I'm still here and hope to be so for a long time as I really do like the forum and it's members. If it hadn't been for the e-mail from Craig and the comment from nel then I would have just drifted away.We have to try to put ourselves into the mind of the new member and look to the forum from the outside. As friendly as we all are, it can be quite daunting for the new person to just jump in and start posting. It was for me and I had the experience of making some 12,000 post to PCA behind me. Think what it must be like for the person new to PC's and the internet let alone a forum. You know, I still haven't been into any of the chat rooms of this or any other forum even to this day. Wouldn't know what to say or where to start. One day I will creep in and watch for a while, then you probably won't be able to stop me talking and wished I'd stayed away!
Sir Radfordin
how can pca delete magazine buying customers,I think andys post was too try and encourage more members to take a active part in the forum.thing is many many member will never see this post....y...they are never on...You people that are againsed me cannot deny that some member just sign up and never post read any boards...or do anything....they sign up and next day change thier mind Make sure your posts are of content that is worth reading and worth coming back to and perhaps those "inactive" members will have good reason not to 'vanish' or not post but will want to be involved. You can either address the symptons of the problem or the problem itself. Addressing the symptons is what you are suggestiong and will acheive nothing because it will be a continual process that always has to be done. Stop the problem happening and it is solved for good.Ever seen the advert for Roundup? You don't just kill the leaves but you kill the root of the problem - in business it is called "Root Cause Analysis".Yer sure loads of peeps sign up for forums, read a bit, post one question and vanish into cyberspace. So do something to change it. Why should people want to come back time and again, why should they post?Find answers to those questions and you'll be able to make big money. People have spent years trying to work out what gives a website "sticky content" and belive me it isn't sticky posts!!!Sites like PCA have managed to reach a critical mass - it doesn't matter who comes and goes there will always be enough people to keep that forum going simply because there are enough people now. Any other forum has to work at reaching that critical mass.As entertaining as they can be, endless jokes collected as we all trawl the net looking for a way to kill time won't achieve this. A start has been made with those who spend time helping people get rid of spyware and the like and that is something to build on.If you want people to 'post' then you give them a reason to do so. Guest ellas
dont think its a content problem,I'm guilty of joining forums and posting once losing the url and never going back,Djohns made a good post,so is a email saying maybe "hi pop into the forum sometime if you get a chance"spam or not, theres a few forums I go on which have every few months a no post delete policy, thats there way of doing things, don't think its right here mind, but they want people to be active and a least post once to say hi.if I remember craig did not delete non posters but people who had not logged in for three months, one of them being my sister :D
Guest northamuk
Forums that claim to have 138000 + members are doing it to keep the Advertising revenue. They have probably never deleted a single member except those who p*ss them off by asking awkward questions that they don't like and of course me 'cos I asked to be deleted. It is somewhat erroneous to compare us with them.
Sir Radfordin
northamuk - no advertiser in their right mind would use the forum member figure quoted by the site. They will use the ABC audited figures that will give a much truer picture of the number of visitors/hits the site is getting.PCA is a sucessful site and I assume Andy-2004 would like to see this site also be sucessful so I see nothing wrong in comparing the two. artist
As entertaining as they can be, endless jokes collected as we all trawl the net looking for a way to kill time won't achieve this. This crops up time and time again. There needs to be a lighter side to a forum too. I used to visit PCA a lot when I was 'learning' - but now, a lot of it is a bit boring. I still got there though. Then there is the Pit - which is a good mixture but a bit 'heavy' at times. But they're a nice bunch. This place has a good mixture of everything, in my opinion, and if people don't come back - well, hey, they probably do the same on loads of forums. ( am a little guilty of that too).
