Cold wet and realy cold and wet here. I had to walk home from school in it. effin froze so i was :dontgetit: i had to change because my cloths were so wet that they were wetter than if they had been put into water lol

Well, Moon, it just shows what a small distance can make to then weather.,

All we had in the uphill section of the county city you know [lincoln] has a few rumbles of thunder in the p.m. otherwise just a few light showers.

Today [thusday] just cloudy at the moment. Might just take a chance and go to the library this am.

Thursday, July 8th. Afternoon.

Man, we just got hit by a cloudburst, the likes of which I've never seen ! It lasted about an hour and a half. The roads were rivers. I've got numerous leaks in the buildings and the barn's flooded. I'd hate to be an insurance adjuster today.

In fact, I'd hate to be an insurance adjuster any time. :D

I don't know for sure what the official diameter of a rain-gauge is but the nearest weather station, RAF Coningsby, reported an inch of rain in an hour yesterday. I reckon we got closer to six inches here as the storm almost completely filled an empty bucket. It was so severe that a lot of water must have bounced out of it on impact.

Sat; 24th July.

Well, this is getting serious. Thursday's coudburst flooded my outbuildings in the time it took to grab a coat and an umbrella. This was even more severe than the previous tropical storms I noted. The local newspaper, Lincs. Echo, reports the entire normal rainfall for July fell in fifteen minutes.

Floods in Lincoln and Boston and the highways dept. claims that they cannot build drainage for freak weather conditions. That's three floods in a month so I wonder why they're still calling it 'freak'

apparently this country is now getting "super cell" storms ....thes are f the same type that result in tornado's in the US ...

As a average of 33 tornadoes a year are recorded and many more unseen, the UK certainly doesn't lack tornadoes. In fact the UK recieves more tornadoes per square km than the USA with the only difference being the intensity. The storms intensity is caused by differences in climate with continental types producing phenomenal thunderstorms while the temperate areas get away with mostly minor or moderate storms. A storm type and its associated weather depends on many various factors. The updraft feature being most important. For a storm to produce severe weather of any type, the cold outflow, i.e the flow from the storm where the precipitation is falling must not cut off the warm moist inflow. That is why wind shear is so important. It can ensure that the warm inflow enters the storm in one area and the outflow exits of the opposite side.

There are 4 basic types of storms:

Single Cell - short lived storm with only one updraft. Thundery activity wil last about 20 minutes before dissapating. Very rarely causes severe weather but you can expect heavy rain, lightning and possibly small hail. A small funnel cloud not out of the question

Multi Cell - this is the most common type of storm for the UK. Easily recognisable by multiple towers which form and move off in one direction. Each cell will only last for 20 minutes but as the new cells form in the same place and move off, those underneath get the impression that the storm is lasting for hours. You can get more than one updraft and downdraft and again not associated with very severe weather. However, very heavy rain and hail can be experienced. Again, the odd funnel cannot be ruled out. One last interesting point is that if a Multicell becomes inflow/ updraft dominant they can turn into the more dangerous Supercell

Super Cell - the most fantastic of all storm types. These will have a dominant rotating updraft and basically affect the weather patterns for miles around. They are very long lived, regulary lasting several hours. They contain very large hail, sometimes the size of golfballs or softballs; grapefruit or coconut sized hail has been observed. Supercells because of their persistant and intense updrats can form deadly tornadoes. In fact, only Supercells can produce Violent F4/5 tornadoes. Cyclic Supercells can also produce several tornadoes and multi-vortex tornadoes

Pulse Storm - these are rather similar to Single Cell but the precipitation is released very quickly cutting off the warm inflow and thus causing the storm to dissapate.
